Let me first start off by saying, I have grown for 10 years and have purchased a lot of growing books in the past, but this one by far is my favorite and this book will be sitting by my garden at all times!

After receiving it in the mail and reading it, I was blown away by the information in this handbook. Sleek design that of a handbook,easy to carry and read.

This book is like no other do it yourself, this has detailed information on how to fix any problem you face while growing, whether you are a hydroponic grower,soil grower, outdoors, indoors or any other growing conditions you are growing, this book has it ALL!! One of the best things about this, not only does it have detailed pictures and information about problems that your plants can end up getting through environment and growers error and then some, but it has remedies and items you can use to fix your problem(s) you have and even has products to use to fix it and even has home organic remedies!!! It also tells you how and why your problem occurred, how to avoid it and fix it! You can't go wrong any way you see it when you buy this book, the price alone is a bargain, this book is a gold mine of information that no other book on marijuana has.

User friendly and easy to understand is a huge bonus. First time growers and experienced growers alike would have no problems understanding the information in this book. Solid accurate information!

I will be recommending this one to friends and other medical growers alike.

About the Author
Barbara Fahs writes the popular column "The Healthful Herbalist" for Hawaii Island Journal. She is also the owner and creator of Hi`iaka's Healing Herb Garden near Hilo, on the Big Island (www.hiiakas.com). Formerly, she was a technical writer and editor in the high technology industry of Silicon Valley, California. She was inspired to write this book because many of the visitors to her garden ask, "how did you build it?" As a California certified Master Gardener (1994), she has built many organic gardens, but never one like this, which she forged from solid pahoehoe lava and transformed into a lush, green sanctuary that specializes in threatened Hawaiian medicinal plants. Even before her move to Hawai`i in 1998, Barbara had the vision of creating a healing garden. She was motivated by the Pele family legend, and especially by Pele's youngest sister, Hi`iaka, who was a gardener, an herbalist and a healer. Review of Complete Home Gardening: Growing Secrets and Techniques for Gardeners (Paperback)

This book is far from "complete" if you are looking for flower gardening information. The information it contains is good, but far too often only a starting source. If you thought you were going to be able to pick out which flowers to plant where and learn all about your favorite flowers - guess again. I would not purchase this book again (if I had it to do over).

There a a boatload of perennial books out there and many of them not so hot. This is an exception. Superior photography with excellent perennial shots showing composition and design. And, it's not just a picture book. The text is well worth the read.

Review of Oklahoma Gardener's Guide (Paperback)

Great book for us that are new to the wonders of gardeing in Oklahoma. There are tips on plants that can handle windy conditions, drought and blistering sun but will come back after the blizzards of winter.
I also like the symbols that tell the plants attributes such as fragrance, attracts bees or birds or butterflies, native plants, etc.
This book goes with me on plant shopping trips.

Review of Month-by-month Gardening In Minnesota (Paperback)

This book is great if you want to hit the ground running. It is comprehensive, covering lawn care, trees, gardening, houseplants, vegetables and more. Its clearly organized so it is easy to use. It tells you what you should be doing NOW, so you can get up to speed very quickly without getting overwhelmed by too much information.

As a life-long apartment dweller, I was starting from complete ignorance when I bought a house and had to learn right away how to care for my lawn and existing landscape plants. This book was *indispensible* and my constant reference during my first two years of homeownership. I still refer to it regularly for timing issues and the helpful tips specific to our MN conditions. Thanks to this book I haven't killed a single one of the plants that came with my house.

Suggestion for future editions: Currently the book is organized into sections according to plant type (annuals, bulbs, herbs, lawn, trees, etc), and then the months of the year are found within each plant section. I have found when using the book, I will read about April, for example, for each of the plant types, so I am skipping all over the book looking for all of the April listings. In future editions, I think it would be helpful if the editors reorganized the sections so that a reader could go to a given month, and then each plant type would be in successive pages within "April".

The content has been GREAT and, despite my suggestion above, the book is easy to use in its current format.

Being new property & house owners in a suburban area adjacent to a deer wintering yard, this book provided us excellent advice on coping with our local deer population. We are planning a garden from scratch, and theinformation is very practical. It should help any gardener with deer intheir area reduce their cost of resultant damage. The book deals with deerbehavioural characteristics, and the likelihood of deer frequenting theproperty, as well as how to plan a deerproof garden. From plants that aredetested by deer, to plants that will guarantee deer company: annual,perennial, shrub & tree choices are listed, including hardiness zoneinformation. A range of strategies for keeping deer out of the garden isalso included. The strategies go from fences to foul smelling substances tonoise makers, and advice is given on the likelihood of success for each. Anexcellent tailorable reference book.

This is an excellent primmer for anyone moving into the Sunshine State. Monica Moran Brandies writes in a style that makes you feel like she's sitting across the table sharing a cup of coffee on a beautiful morning in Florida. She gives lots of easy to understand details on what soil you're dealing with and what plants can be used for success. She gives lots of information on both vegetable gardening and plants so there is something in this book for everyone. It's the best book on Florida gardening that we have found so far.

It past years, the fall season was considered as one of harvesting and getting flower beds and gardens cleaned up and ready for the winter. You're there.You have the family, the house, the yard, the car, the job that requires a commute.Given the way that a lot of us live, it can be very useful to have a check-list -- to do a walk-around of home and garden and see the latest thinking on how to minimize our impact on the environment.As someone who has been following these issues for years, I found it interesting that the evidence on some things seems to argue for different choices -- and that I had been way off on my thinking in other specifics.It's a pleasurable read -- theretro photos remind me that the suburbanization of America was rooted in a more innocent time, when few people had the foresight to see its results.What is beyond the scope of the book, but the more important question, is how we get to the point where we are creating not 20% less damage but 50% or even no damage at all -- and those are the "tough questions" that this book just does not ask.

Review of Early American Gardens: "For Meate or Medicine" (Paperback)

I have been researching the history of gardening in America and have not found a better rescource than Ann Leighton's books, specifically Early American Gardens: For Meate or Medicine. This book is full of good factsand is very readable. Covering the colonization of North America from itsearliest years, this book goes into detail on primary sources as well asrecent scholarly efforts. This book will be useful for anyone interrestedin gardening (especially if making an historic garden on your own property)or in history (especially if you are bored reading about politicalhistory).

First, let me explain, my husband is the gardener, I am the book reader, so we really got together on this one.He moves the perennials and shrubs around and changes the garden plan so often that I wouldn't dare attempt to cross the garden at night without fear of running smack into a Burning Bush!The ultimate result of his long and dedicated devotion to the garden has produced some spectatular results and much can be attributed to this terrific book.

First of all, it told him everything he was doing wrong, and his response to that was, "Oh my ..., I've been working on this for five years and made every mistake in the book!"Secondly, it told him how to do it right. The book covers absolutely everything from planning, choosing the proper plants for the proper location and soil, and how to create symmetry in your garden.The photography is beautifuland the encyclopedia of garden plants is worth its weight in gold!

Review of Flour Power: A Guide To Modern Home Grain Milling (Paperback)

I'm a bread-baking microbiologist with a different take on this book. One reviewer thought it had too much info but I think when an author examines a topic microscopically - without leaving a
who-what-where-when-why question about any aspect - the reader can't lose. And even if you happened to decide milling wasn't for you (a possibility another reviewer speculated about), the book is still a treasure trove of tidbits, details, history and how-to's that make for satisfying reading on a hot-tea evening.

Once I got my mill (I took one of the "quick-pick" options the author provided.) and some good high-protein wheat (I'm lucky to have the legendary Bob's Red Mill within driving distance.), it
was surprisingly easy to get bread without a hassle every three days or so. Although the bread machine makes a crust slightly thicker than I like, the rest of the bread is incredible and it's truly a time-saver. As the author of this book stresses, it's not the milling that takes time, it's the bread making.

Another book I recommend to real gourmet bakers (the kind who wouldn't stoop to a bread machine) for some delicious and heart-healthy ways to use home-milled grains is "Mediterranean
Grains and Greens" by Paula Wolfert. Similarly well written and detailed, it provides a tantalizing glimpse of a whole new realm of possibilities for using whole grains (and greens).

This is Mary Preus' second book about herbs. The first, "Growing Herbs", covered the basics but was limited in scope. This book expands on the first, guiding the reader deeper into the world of herbs as well as describing 50 of the best-known herbs in detail. While the book is focussed on growing herbs in the Pacific Northwest, it would be a useful book for herb lovers anywhere.

The writer was for 20 years owner of the Silver Bay Herb Farm in Washington State. In the first 80 pages of the book she shares her extensive knowledge of herb growing basics and of using herbs for cooking, healing and crafts. She includes plenty of recipes that are both imaginative and practical. In this section also she explains how to plan and build different types of herb gardens, and how to harvest and preserve herbs.

Most of the book, however, is a detailed look at 50 species of herbs. The writer includes information about planting, propagation, pets and diseases, harvesting and uses for cooking, healing and crafts. I particularly liked the information about the chemical elements found in each species and their value in balanced healing and a healthy diet.

This is a thoughtfully written book from a knowledgeable and experienced herb gardener. The book ends with a calendar of seasonal tasks in the herb garden, a list of the herb gardens open in the region, sources for plants and seeds, and publications and societies of interest to herb gardeners.
