Review of More Natural Remedies: What to Do to Prevent and Treat Disease Naturally (Paperback)

This book, along with the first one "Natural Remedies" are well-researched, something that is not so common among books about natural remedies. It is also nice that it thorougly explains simple remedies that most anyone could do at home for common discomforts, so that we may reduce the need to frequently run to the doctor for every little thing, or take a lot of extra medications that have side effects.

Review of Homeopathy for Your Cat: Remedies for Common Feline Ailments (Paperback)

I am currently studying for my Bachelor of Homeopathy and have two cats, and this book is the best that I have read on the subject. It's very informative, practical, and easy to use as a reference text, but it also makes a very interesting read as Dr Wolff gives some amazing insights into feline health and behaviour. After I read it I used one of the recommended remedies on one of my cats who has suffered from gastro-intestinal disease all his life (which is not curable with conventional medicine) and after only 2 doses all his symptoms had disappeared completely and he has been 100% healthy ever since. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how to treat their cat using homeopathy.

Product Description
Written for both the cat lover, as well as veterinarians, breeders, and show exhibitors who deal professionally with felines, Homeopathy for Your Cat offers detailed, authoritative information on a wide variety of homeopathic treatments available for common cat ailments. Written in an engaging, empathetic style by a respected German veterinarian, the book covers both acute and chronic problems in the ears, nose, and throat, the heart and circulatory system, the digestive organs, the ligaments, tendons, and joints, the reproductive system and urinary tract, and the skin. Individual chapters include an introduction to basic first aid, diagnostic reviews, and information on how to treat various dangerous viral and bacterial diseases, including feline distemper. A concise manual that covers everything the concerned cat lover or professional needs to know, from symptoms and illnesses to remedies and general care tips, Homeopathy for Your Cat addresses a market for alternative treatments believed to comprise a robust ten percent of cat owners-and growing.

Review of Home, Miss Moses: A Novel in the Time of Harriet Tubman (Paperback)

I found this book inspiring and enriching. It's a novel, but I learned a lot from it.It's a suspense story in some ways and a history lesson too.An intriguing, complex book, it follows a vast sweep of American history that this one woman's life covered in reality.Harriet Tubman was no ordinary woman. And you get an up-close and personal glimpse of her spirit and stunning courage and fortitude in these pages. The horrific injustice of slavery as she lived it and saw it leaps off the page. You get a window onto both the remarkable cunning and the deep heart of this visionary American patriot who sacrificed everything to end this shameful episode of our history.Although it's a bit of a struggle to get used to the "patois" of her voice (a slave dialect) and there are also a lot of people and places to keep track of as you read, keeping you on your toes, it's well worth it.Check it out.

Product Description
Inspired by the author's personal relationship with her, this compelling novel is a fictional account of the legendary Harriet Tubman and her life during the American Civil War. Told in the first person, the story begins with Tubman's life as a slave and follows her fearless pursuit of freedom, both for herself and countless others, on the Underground Railroad. Gripping and highly graphic, the novel reveals Tubman's days as a spy for the Union during battles in the South, presenting a new image of the horrors of war.

Review of How to Make a Pregnant Woman Happy: Quick and Effective Home Remedies for over 60 of Pregnancy's Most Common Problems (The Sharpman Edge, 4) (Paperback)

The other reviewers (especially the first one) may have missed the point a little. This book is specifically written FOR DADS and (to be politically correct) "life-partners." It's NOT designed to be a "book for expectant mothers, but which dads-to-be might also enjoy." If there is a dad-to-be in the relationship who actually cares about the mother & child, HE should be the one reading this book. It's a great resource for helping us guys understand what's going on, as well as how to treat our wives/partners like queens. It doesn't pretend to tell us how to completely understand women; that's impossible, especially during pregnancy. It does, however, give advice on how to deal with things in a healthy, positive way.

I appreciate that there's a book like this that explains everything in layman's terms, but with enough depth to keep from insulting my intelligence. I didn't find it condescending at all. In fact, being a first-time dad-to-be, there were many aspects of the pregnancy that I was clueless about. And paternalistic? In my view, since the book was written for men, that's a good thing.

Product Description
A handy reference for any father looking to be useful, this guide can also be used by any woman looking for fast, effective answers about her pregnancy. Information designed to make a pregnant woman happy, including ideal baby growth, monitoring and testing choices, diet and nutrition, and tips on how to make her more comfortable is featured. Also covered are her fears about the well-being of the baby, her fears about labor and delivery, and postpartum depression. From the man's perspective, issues such as feeling disconnected from the pregnancy and handling mood swings are addressed in detail.

Review of Working at Home While the Kids Are There, Too (Paperback)

This book would be good if the title was "How to start an at-home business."But, as far as having anything to do with working at home with children, there is very little. The little it does have is basic parenting skills. From the title I expected the book to have tips about how to handle the children while working at home. It did not.The word "working" in the title is a present tense word meaning that you are currently at work in your home. This books gives instructions on how to begin to work at home.I am very disappointed and feel completely mislead by the title. I did not gain one thing from reading this book.

Product Description
Entrepreneur Loriann Oberlin shows readers how to successfully combine having a career and children through home-based employment. This book is a smart approach to business that allows a person to work while handling the duties of caring for the children. Through humor, advice and encouragement, Working at Home While the Kids are There, Too covers choosing a successful career, keeping the kids stimulated while getting the work done, and setting up budgets and space with limited resources.

Review of The Virgin Homeowner: The Essential Guide to Owning, Maintaining, and Surviving Your Home (Paperback)

This book is not a how-to fixit book, and thank goodness. I'd read a dozen of those and I still didn't understand how my furnace (or anything else) works. Then I read Papalos' book and finally I understand. My house is no longer a scary mystery to me. I came across this book after I had already been in my first house for a number of years. I don't know if I would have bought a different house had I been armed with the knowledge from this book, but I surely would have handled my new ownership differently.

One of the best aspects of this book is its conversational, humorous style. As a virgin homeowner I repeatedly felt embarrassed or frustrated because I couldn't speak knowledgably to repairmen or home improvement store people. Papalos has been there, too, I think, and her humor encouraged me that I "wasn't alone." Finding myself chuckling as I read about plumbing traps and sacrificial anodes was certainly refreshing.

The descriptions are straightforward in ordinary language, and the terms and jargons are demystified. Since some house systems vary with geography and house age, Papalos did her research and addressed all the systems (forced air, gas, electric, oil, heat pump, *and* baseboard heat, for example). I disagree with another reviewer that this book applies only to a northeastern homeowner; I thought it was quite thorough in addressing the variations.

I also like her "systems" approach to explaining the house (plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling, etc.) and how she addresses issues beyond physical construction of the house, such as pest control (termite picnics). She alerts the reader about some important maintenance tasks, though there is more of this kind of information for some topics than others. This isn't a home maintenance how-to book, though, so this is a very minor criticism.

I bought copies of this book for each of my three new homeowning siblings. I hope it helps them come to appreciate their houses the way I have mine.

in 1999 I read Nancy SantoPietro's first book, and was so interested that I called her for a consultation.I was very unhappy with job, my home, my health - Nancy took the time to explain why Black Hat Sect Feng Shui works and how it worked and gave me a list of things to do.Well since that time, I have a new job, my apt. is always neat - no stagnant energy - and lo and behold, my bouts with bronchitis have ceased. When this new book came out, I was eager to buy it and read it, because it makes so much sense. It is honest, readable, and you can tell that she wrote the book wanting to help people, not just because Feng Shui is "hot" right now. She is one practitioner that really cares about her clients.I highly recommend her as a Feng Shui practitioner and both her books are very, very easy to read and her advice is also easy to follow. My life has improved tremendously since SantoPietro's Feng Shui expertise touched my life and I hope others will be encouraged to read her books so they too can be helped!

Review of 20 Questions To Ask Before Buying a Home (Paperback)

This book is a quick, uncomplicated read about homebuying. It covers most of the basics one should consider when purchasing a home. However, I thought some of the questions ( such as Questions One and Two and Questions Seven and Eight) could have been combined into three concise questions questions.

Still, the book made one very important point: get everything in writing.Although the text was too short to talk about the ins and outs of mortgage finance and protecting oneself in homeownership, again, the book did bring up most of the key points. However, the book failed to enlighten the prospective homeowner about several important issues:

1.Any insurance that you are obligated to purchase in concert with thehome purchase serves to protect the lender, and not you.Future editions of the text must endeavor to elaborate on this point, and let the reader know about universal title insurance (which protects you and the bank against claims of ownership) as well as the various types of home insurance (some policies only cover flood and fire, while others cover things like mold). In the book's defense, they did mention the voluntary purchase of a home warranty, which I must admit, was a new concept to me.However, once again, and I stress this with force, EVERYTHING YOU ARE OBLIGATED TO PURCHASE SERVES THE BANK'S INTEREST, while those things you voluntarily elect to purchase protects your interest.

2.There are many non-profit organizations that assist first-time homebuyers in purchasing a home. Some are comprehensive, offering homebuyer education as well as financing.Others simply provide downpayment assistance, while others limit themselves to advocacy. You can get a list of those organizations in your area that assist folks in purchasing a home from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.Future editions should also mention that this list can also be obtained, free of charge, from county or state housing agencies.

3.Future editions of this should make the reader aware of the various homeownership alternatives and their merits and de-merits.It would be nice to know what the differences are between a manufactured home, a regular house, a condo and a co-op type deal are.

Readers of this book would do well to treat this book as a basic primer on home buying.More advanced readers can skip this book and read something like Homebuying for Dummies or The Complete Idiot's Guide to Homebuying, both of which one may find to be a bit more comprehensive. For those of you who have never owned a home, and know nothing about homebuying, thisbook serves as a good starting point for your homebuying education.

Review of The R.A.T. Real-World Aptitude Test: Preparing Yourself for Leaving Home (Capital Ideas) (Paperback)

I got this in the mail a few weeks ago from a close family friend for a graduation gift. At first I thought it looked really stupid, but I was bored one afternoon so I just picked it up. It is so fascinating! Each section is short enough so that you can read as much or as little as you feel like. And it's really easy to skip around and only read the sections that interest you. Now I read a section or two everyday. It's a great book because it covers so much information in an interesting and funny way. The quiz format adds a little element of fun into the whole advice book thing. It's also neat how they end each section by telling you where to go for more info on something. Each section is informative and funny at the same time. And it covers really important everyday sort of stuff from basic cooking, to how to change a tire, to basic knowledge for credit cards. If you are looking for a great book for a graduate (of college or high school) this graduate is telling you to get this book!

Product Description
As featured on "Good Morning America" and in time for Graduation 2003, The R.A.T. tests your readiness for the real world, and provides answers to some of life's most common stumbling blocks.

Divided into two parts, like the SATs, the first section contains questions in thirty different subject areas, and the second part provides answers and explanations to these life-defining questions. Subject areas include cooking, managing money, etiquette, geography, sports and many more. As a test of preparedness for the real world, the R.A.T. provides answers to some of life's most common stumbling blocks, such as how to change a flat tire or how to handle computer problems as well as facts on generalized knowledge in areas such as geography and politics. Review of Half Way Home From Kinderlou: The Happy Childhood Memories of a Grandfather (Paperback)

I grew up a 'white boy' in Washington, DC. during the same years James Edward grew up in southern Georgia. The difference is now, 60 + years later, as plain as "black and white". James' description of family and school life in the black, segreated south tells me that he enjoyed relationships within his family and community that never existed in mine.
I thoroughly enjoyed this man's writings and only hope he follows through with more of his memories in later editions. And, I also hope he finally wound up with a copy of Black Beauty that he could call his own!

Product Description
Through a collection of short stories, a grandfather describes his happy childhood in the small town of Valdosta, Georgia. It was a simple time when children played simple games with simple toys. Those were the days when failure of a child to say "yes ma'am" and "yes sir" to grown folks was considered an act of disrespect which brought swift rebuke and punishment from the disrespected adult and the child's parents. Most homeowners in his neighborhood only dreamed of indoor plumbing, electric lights and home telephone service. Despite the prevailing social order, dictated by racial segregation which choked the advancement of some of his neighbors, little James Edward was often permitted broader liberties to expand his borders simply because all of the adults encouraged his growth. His timing was right. Colored adults nourished his self confidence as though vicariously rekindling their own aspirations. White adults saw a fast moving innocent youngster with a cautions and keen intellect, so letting him roam was a gift to a child which did not threaten their prerogatives. So adults of both races sought ways to assuage the harshness of segregation for little James Edward by smothering him with affection and special attention. The effects of this esteem is reflected in his pleasant memories of the post depression years and other events of that time.

About the Author
JAMES EDWARD ALEXANDER, ESQ. In 1951, on his 17th birthday, he entered the U. S Air Force. He was initially trained as a medical technician, but when the Air Force observed his communications skills he was further trained in journalism and broadcasting. Following his assignment as Station Manager of an Armed Forces Ratio/Television station in Greenland, in 1965, he was assigned as a senior instructor in broadcasting at the prestigious Defense Information School. In 1969, after 14 years of persistently attending military and civilian schools wherever he was stationed, he qualified for a one year leave of absence from military service to complete his college education. Alexander chose Indiana University, where, in 1970, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Broadcast Management, he says, "With the support of my former spouse and our four children." Following his retirement from military service in 1971, he held management and sales positions with Time Life Broadcasting Company, McGraw-Hill Broadcasting Company, Combined Communications, Press Secretary for the re-election campaign of a U.S. Senator, and videotape operator for the ABC Network. He says, "At the age of 52, I felt the urge to complete a list of personal objectives. My path led me to the Whittier Law School, where, with the help of my present wife, I prepared to pass the California Bar Examination, on the initial attempt, at age 56." From 1991 to 2003, he was a partner in the law firm of Adams and Alexander, with law offices in Pasadena, and Beverly Hills. He is a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of The United States, United States Circuit Court of Appeals (Ninth Circuit), United States District Court (Central District of California), and the State Bar of California. This is a unique and valuable bible of the current state of healing arts. The author has no political agenda. He does not favor 'alternative' vs 'Western' or 'traditional' medicine. He just objectively tells you what works and what does not work so well given specific health condition.

He allows you to attack any ailment you have with a multi-medicinal approach. For any given condition, this book makes insightful recommendation from ayuverdic, homeopathic, herbal, and traditional medicine.

It is unfortunate that within the medical establishment (the AMA) this 'Blended' approach has not taken hold.It is obviously much more successful than going at it from one limited perspective.

Thanks to this book though, it is like having your own in house doctor.

Review of How Everyday Products Make People Sick: Toxins at Home and in the Workplace (Paperback)

This book focuses on industrial hazards, with brief explanations, and reasonably complete histories, of the industrial processes insofar as the history and the knowledge of the process can inform knowledge of the hazard presented to workers and to product users. One key theme is how knowledge of many of today's industrial hazards has been with us for very long periods of time, but that--and I interject here my own view--given the emphasis on economic development concurent with the rise of industrial society--medical and regulatory efforts at controlling or reducing the risks of the hazards have been unsuccessful, due to the inconvenence or costs to the industries so associated. Without actually using the term "externalities," a propensity to assign those costs from industries to their employees, the environment, and to product-users is documented.

Another key theme is that the knowledge of the hazards and their tentatively arrived-at mitigation measures has ebbed and flowed, with populations thinking that effective controls have been implemented when in fact they have not been.

A further point of knowledge is that there is no clear dividing line between exposures in the workplace and exposures in the home. For this reason, and probably because the medical literature from which he is able to draw has dealt more with workplace hazards than with hazards in the home, the focus is on industry, though the writing moves from industry to the home when the hazards move there also. I would recommend the book to a popular audience for knowledge of industrial hazards in the home, but only if the reader is willing to learn the author's lessons regarding how the danger origininates in industry and moves from there to the home, and is willing to also learn the important lesson that the hazards to the workers who produce the products are significant factors in making product choices, as well as the actual toxic effect to the user. He quotes Jerry Garcia on the hellish aspects of vinyl record production. No special knowledge of chemistry is required to understand the text.

Unfortunately I do not have the book in front of me now, but from memory, here are a few of the topics covered:

- mercury fumes
- cotton dust
- carbon disulfide
- chlorine
- metal working fumes
- multiple causes of Parkinsonism

I do not mean to imply that the author appeared to me to be less than comprehensive in his addressing of toxic processes and products, although he did not deal extensively with military industries, nor with the current issue regarding the environmental distribution of uranium munitions. He touched on the shortcomings of the regulatory process under lassiz-faire capitalism, and sees the two most important upcoming issues, besides recovering from recent efforts at governmental deregulation and disassembling and hampering of regulatory agencies, as the toxic effects of additives to gasoline, and the toxic effects of wood preservation chemicals, both of which are throughly reviewed, noting the special dangers to children.

I enjoyed his end-noted documentantion of the most obscure points of his historical reviews, some of which were not even central to what he was saying. I felt he liked doing this sort of extensive research, was expert in his field, and that the writing was a labour of love.

Product Description
This book reveals the hidden health dangers in many of the seemingly innocent products we encounter every day--a tube of glue in a kitchen drawer, a bottle of bleach in the laundry room, a rayon scarf on a closet shelf, a brass knob on the front door, a wood plank on an outdoor deck. A compelling exposé, written by a physician with extensive experience in public health and illustrated with disturbing case histories, How Everyday Products Make People Sick is a rich and meticulously documented account of injury and illness across different time periods, places, and technologies. It presents a picture not of one exceptional or corrupt industry but rather of how run-of-the-mill manufacturing processes and consumer marketing expose workers and the general public alike to toxic hazards. More troubling still, even when such hazards are recognized, calls for their control are routinely ignored. Written for a wide audience, it offers a critical and disquieting perspective on the relationship between industrial development and its adverse health consequences.
Among the surprisingly common hazards discussed in How Everyday Products Make People Sick:
* Glue and rubber cement
* Chlorine bleach
* Rayon and other synthetic textiles
* Welding and other metal fumes
* Wood preservatives
* Gasoline additives

Review of Remedies and Rituals: Folk Medicine in Norway and the New Land (Hardcover)

This book is a fascinating, well written book not only about Norwegian folk medicine but also about Norwegian culture. If you've ever wonderedwhat made your Norwegian ancestors tick, this is the book to read. This is one of the best books about Norwegians I have ever read. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Product Description
To cure a fever that begins with chills, write the following on a piece of bread and give it to the patient for eight days, one piece each day, and on the ninth day, burn the last piece: Colameris x, Colameri x, Colamer x, Colame x, Colam x, Cola x, Col x, Co x, and C x. To prevent the huldrefolk from stealing your healthy child and leaving a child with rickets in its place, make three dolls from the child's clothing to put into the cradle. The huldrefolk will take one of them instead of your child. These and many more fascinating folk-healing rituals were secretly administered by healers, "witches," and religious caregivers who tended the medical and spiritual needs of rural Norwegians for hundreds of years. In Remedies and Rituals, Kathleen Stokker culls from hundreds of original documents and first-hand accounts to detail the ingredients, customs, and histories behind natural remedies, potions, whispered spells, and the infamous "black books" used for centuries by Norway's folk healers. Stokker also illuminates the surprising personalities of those who risked imprisonment and persecution to help fellow Norwegians throughout the nineteenth century, as well as the often reluctant healers in the U.S. who continued to treat immigrants living in rural communities beyond the reach of doctors. Dodging harsh criminal laws championed by formally trained doctors, these rebel practitioners drew on ancient written and oral sources to treat everything from burns, broken bones, and whooping cough to difficult labors and emotional stress. Kathleen Stokker is a professor of Norwegian at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Recipient of Norway's prestigious St. Olav Medal in 2006, she is the author of Keeping Christmas: Yuletide Traditions in Norway and the New Land (MHS Press).

Review of Not So Big Remodeling: Tailoring Your Home for the Way You Really Live (Hardcover)

As a designer, I like to read books on home and garden design and remodeling. Not So Big Remodeling, by Sarah Susanka and Marc Vessallo was wonderful.

This book is weighty, and beautifully laid out. It has tons of photographs, diagrams, and floor plans. And, it is simply loaded with information.

Not So Big Remodeling is also great because it shows how small--and inexpensive remodels--can yield big results.

In the introduction, Susanka writes: "It is my fervent hope that you'll discover that the house of your dreams is actually hiding right where you live today." That's what this book is all about--customizing your home so that it fits your needs exactly. You may still need the help of experts, but this book teaches you to ask the right questions, to figure out your needs and then address them.

The book begins with the remodeling jobs Susanka did in her home.

The book covers remodeling jobs for every room in the house. I like the "Questions to ask yourself," found throughout the book, and the many useful bulleted lists.

The chapter on green remodeling was a great addition. Here again, Susanka shares what eco-friendly upgrades she has done in her home.

I highly recommend this book before you do any remodeling.

If you are interested in this topic, you may also like an award winningbook on improving and greening the interior design of your home--HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET is great for that. For the outside, I recommend both Susanka's OUTSIDE THE NOT SO BIG HOUSEand COMPLETE HOME LANDSCAPING givespractical advice for the property.

Review of Organic Pest Control for Home & Garden (Paperback)

This is a brief but excellent introduction to the topic. Although short, it's full of hundreds of tips and pieces of information on how to control various pests in your garden. Knowing a little about entomology helps, but isn't necessary. But a lot of the control comes down to using a weak solution of soap or lime to spray directly on the pests. This doesn't harm the plants, apparently, but many insect pests are susceptible to it. And there are many other such tips and methods discussed in the book. Some plants, such as marigolds, interestingly, can be planted also to control certain infestations since their roots secret a substance that is toxic to certain pests. Overall an interesing, practical, and informative little guide on the subject.

Product Description
This handy tool for pest identification is just the right size for being taken right into the garden. Large color pictures and descriptions of each pest and their life cycle help make identification easy.

Review of Doctor's Book of Food Remedies [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I loved reading this book because it was packed with information on the foods we love.More than 9,000 scientific studies have proven beyond doubt that food is our best medicine. This book shows which foods are the most healing. In nature animals know which foods to nibble on to get well, with this book...we will too!

I think the best way to use this book is to completely read it cover to cover and write down every food you think you need. Then, try to incorporate those foods into your diet. Studies have identified 107 of the most powerful healing foods, spices and herbs. There are some compounds which just cannot be absorbed by the human bloodsteam unless they are eaten in a food.Taking ellagic acid (a cancer fighter) in a pill form doesn't work.It is essential to eat strawberries or other berries in order to obtain ellagic acid. After reading this book you will look at a stawberry pie in a new way.

"Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food." --Hippocrates, 400 B.C.

This book also gives helpful hints on how to select produce and keep it fresh. There is also some great information on how to prepare fruits and vegetables.

You will find great life saving information:

Eating cherries helps to prevent cancer, "perillyl alcohol" blocks the formation of a variety of cancers and contain a compound called quercetin. This neutralizes cancer-causing agents in the body.It also shields your DNA against cancer.

Eating red grapefruits will give you more "lycopene" which helps protect against heart disease.Ruby Red and Star Ruby are great choices.

"Diet has the distinction of being the only major determinant of health that is completely under your control." --Andrew Weil, M.D.

The recipes are easy to make and there are plenty of them. There are also plenty of great pictures to get you to the store!Blueberries anyone...

Review of The Best Home Businesses for the 21st Century (Paperback)

This is a 1999 edition of a similar book published by the authors in 1994. It is a good basic overview of the scope of possible home businesses that have proven successful for people in the past. It is not an encyclopedia of all possible ways to earn money from home, but rather focuses on what the Edwards' have determined to be the top 100 possibilities.

There is a fair amount of detail in each job description, although being familiar with some, I can say that the information given in those cases is not enough to actually start such a business, nor is it an in-depth look. The section on Desktop Video barely mentions the fact that you need to have a certain amount of talent, and that it is not an easy job at all. This book is designed to give one enough information about a business to determine if it is worth further research, and gives some resources for that research.

Given the age of the book, some of the information is way out of date. Again, the Desktop Video section is a good example: a 3 gig hard drive is hardly considered large today, and is not nearly enough to even begin editing video. This was obviously before the advent of MiniDV, which requires 13 gig or more per hour of video. I also found a glaring error on page 16: a week has 168 hours, not 174 (at least where I come from: 24 hours times 7 days). While such an error is easy to have creep in, a fact that easily checked but missed does make one pause about other information in the book. The book has a long Table of Contents but no Index.

If you are thinking about trying a business of your own, this book can be helpful in getting a basic idea of what each of these businesses might involve. After you get an idea of a few businesses in which you might be interested from this book, you should research your chosen fields with much more depth. This book is not enough on its own to start you in a business, IMHO.

Review of The Green Pharmacy: New Discoveries in Herbal Remedies for Common Diseases and Conditions from the World's Foremost Authority on Healing Herbs (Paperback)

The Green Pharmacy should be owned by any herbalist, naturopath, homeopath, or student of natural remedies. It truly is a great resource for information, and Duke does write in an agreeable manner that almost always sits well with the reader.

His knowledge and expertise in the fields of research come across loud and clear without him having to pronounce it boldly. Reading the back of the book and seeing his credentials was almost as enjoyable as reading the book itself. Much of the text is taken over with research, combined with his own uses, things he's heard, seen, and believe.

I do actually have a fault of two, and I see from the other opinions around here I may be in the minority. I have to credit Henrietta Kress for this, though, as she said it first and I realized I agreed with her but it had never clicked with me before. One of those things you can't put your finger on:

""I have the 1997 edition of this. It's a book written by a researcher, not by a practitioner, and it shows in some of the herbal recommendations. Don't trust it, get one of the books written by a practitioner instead."" (End Quote)

You know, she's right in a way. I always found it strange that throughout the book he mainly suggests soups, pills bought, standardized pills, etc. He never gives many personal experiences with something other than a single remedy used as a food addition. This is not saying this book is not worth it - far from it - but it is bringing up the valid point.

Also, there is another thing that DOES bug me is the "make your own medicine" section. A few pages long, so not actually a section, but you get my drift. For tinctures he says to let it sit about a week and then strain. A week? Every other source states 2 weeks minimum. Nothing is mentioned on sun either or any heating.

Also, on salves he recommends not making your ownbut buying it from a store, saying that it's "messy stuff". Of course he does say that he doesnt have luck making salves, where they turn out too dry or runny, so this could be the reason he says this.

Beyond these small gripes though, this really is an excelletn book. I always return to it when wondering on a condition. Sure it's not advanced herbalism in any shape or form, but it works and for good reason. He gives plenty of information and doesn't seem rushed like so many books out there do. He recommends more than just herbal remedies as well. Sometimes I dont agree with what he says, but for the majority of the time I do (and that's not the point with reviews anyway), but at least he always explains his reason. He doesn't just say: Dont take this or, This causes liver damage. He says WHY and I appreciate that.

Review of Flour Power: A Guide To Modern Home Grain Milling (Paperback)

I'm a bread-baking microbiologist with a different take on this book. One reviewer thought it had too much info but I think when an author examines a topic microscopically - without leaving a
who-what-where-when-why question about any aspect - the reader can't lose. And even if you happened to decide milling wasn't for you (a possibility another reviewer speculated about), the book is still a treasure trove of tidbits, details, history and how-to's that make for satisfying reading on a hot-tea evening.

Once I got my mill (I took one of the "quick-pick" options the author provided.) and some good high-protein wheat (I'm lucky to have the legendary Bob's Red Mill within driving distance.), it
was surprisingly easy to get bread without a hassle every three days or so. Although the bread machine makes a crust slightly thicker than I like, the rest of the bread is incredible and it's truly a time-saver. As the author of this book stresses, it's not the milling that takes time, it's the bread making.

Another book I recommend to real gourmet bakers (the kind who wouldn't stoop to a bread machine) for some delicious and heart-healthy ways to use home-milled grains is "Mediterranean
Grains and Greens" by Paula Wolfert. Similarly well written and detailed, it provides a tantalizing glimpse of a whole new realm of possibilities for using whole grains (and greens).

Product Description
The only book written on modern home grain milling. This book manages to present a technical topic in a fascinating and entertaining way. Unusually detailed and littered with historical tidbits. Includes mill selection criteria, an education on bread wheats, secrets for making deliciously light whole meal breads, and purchasing contacts for dozens of grain mills, plus oat rollers and bread wheats.

Review of Passive Solar House: The Complete Guide to Heating and Cooling Your Home (Hardcover)

First to address TJ in Houston's cooling problems. 1) movable awnings over windows and walls exposed to sunlight 2) slit windows at the bottom and top of the north side wall will allow heat to escape at the top which will pull cool air in at the bottom, especially at night and especially in a two story building. You might also explore cooling towers which essentially do the same thing.

I've been involved with building houses for several decades, and I've been thinking passive solar for quite some time too. In fact many of the ideas in this book are very similar to ideas I've developed independently.

I've seen everything on thousands of jobs from everyday homes to ultra gigantic mansions. One thing I've learned from the BEST builders is to avoid the experimental. Avoid extravagant shapes. Build simple buildings. Put your money into quality material and hardware... unless you want problems. And please keep the place neat. Nobody likes tripping over or cleaning up garbage the last guy left. Call your subs BEFORE you need them and ask them what drives them nuts, instead of finding out you made the same goof everyone makes, after you've spent a bunch of TIME and MONEY building it wrong.

I have to say the slab thing, and the ideas about the Sun's inclination etc are ingenious. They've changed my thinking considerably.

WHY THEN ONLY 3 STARS?

Well mainly some small, but galling, typos, and the lack of a website, or at least an obvious website. James needs to get feedback on these problems and the revisions need to be posted somewhere so they don't keep driving people nuts:

1) on page 76, Table 6-10 it says "see appendix 4." If you use appendix 4, like I did, it will totally confuse you and give you a headache. It SHOULD read appendix 5. The data on appendix 4 LOOKS like it MIGHT work which makes the problem worse. This one took me almost an hour to figure out.

2) The book has many pictures and come with even more on a CD, many useless, like a picture of a truck delivering stuff. I've seen trucks on roads before James. This is no help. However there is no CLEAR picture of HOW the slab is CONNECTED to the foundation walls. I'd like to see a close up. The diagrams are not clear enough on this issue. I don't have that much experience in this area and I'd like an answer. It seems to me that if the slab is in contact with the foundation wall there will be heat loss thought transmission from the slab to the foundation wall. Isn't that why the wall is insulated on the inside? If the slab does not contact the wall it seems to me that it's free floating which makes me nervous. In the diagram it looks like plywood ties the slab and wall together which make me think termites. Poured concrete slabs are usually tied together using rebar or similar. What is the secret?

3) on page 67 he goes though a series of equations to derive the elegant end equation I=Btus/hr·ºF. However you don't need the last equation to derive the information on the next pages. You need the NEXT to the last equation. It took me half and hour to get past that confusion. I kept looking for the LAST equation. Where oh where was it? The math is moderately difficult for us non engineer people but this typo made my head hurt. Ouch!

4) the diagram on page 46 appears to have a stud that makes a 45 degree turn and then another 45 degree turn??? I really don't think it does this, but I'll be durned if I can figure what they are trying to illustrate.

Anyway James, if you see this please put up a little tiny website with your email address please, so we can contact you about errors. A web appendix with corrected typos would be nice too. Websites are cheap and easy now days and you don't need much of a website really.

Otherwise great ideas.
