Review of Lasagna Gardening: A New Layering System for Bountiful Gardens: No Digging, No Tilling, No Weeding, No Kidding! (Paperback)

I believe that when it comes to books presenting new ways of doing anything, the only testimony that counts is that which comes from firsthand experience.Well folks, I'm here to tell you after a year of gardening the lasagna way that my firsthand experience shows this book is one of the wisest investments any gardener can make.Let me tell you about my 2003 garden.

First, a short outline of lasagna gardening technique:soak b&w newspapers in water, then overlap sections in a single layer directly on top of premarked sod area. This smothers the weeds/grass underneath. Then put a 4 inch layer of moistened peat moss over that, followed by a moist layer of organic shredded green material, followed by another layer of peat moss, followed by a layer of moist compost or yard waste, repeat the peat moss/organic matter pattern until your bed is built up to at least 18 inches high.Finish with compost on top, then either let it break down for a few months for certain crops or plant seeds and transplants directly into the matrix by pushing aside layers and inserting. As the layers break down, the earthworms will be eating the sod and breaking up the newspapers, mixing the layers together for you.The final result is an organic, self-tilled soil that's rich and free of disease and weed seeds. It's so simple.

Note:the author did neglect to mention the importance of wetting down each layer as you build the beds.I only figured this out because I had made compost before and I knew you needed moist materials for it to work.

In late fall of 2002 I built a 5 foot by 25 foot border bed for perennial flowers the lasagna way after reading Patricia Lanza's book.It sounded almost too good to be true - no digging, no tilling, no weeding? What was the catch, I asked myself. When I was done I planted perennials taken from four inch pots, watered them in, and left them for the winter rains to take care of (we can do that in So. Cal, hee hee). They settled in nicely and grew steadily, but it was cool weather so the roots were doing most of the growth at that time.A few months later as top growth appeared I was encouraged to build more lasagna beds in my vegetable garden - two 5 by 5 raised beds to go with my other two traditionally tilled raised beds (those were a lot of work, double digging, sifting rocks, mixing compost, etc.I wish now that I had known about the lasagna method a few years ago!).After about two hour's work I was done layering my new vegetable beds and watered them down to compost a little. In late May, I transplanted sweet peppers and basil starts to one lasagna bed and planted cantaloupes and flowers in the other.

Those two lasagna beds outperformed the traditional beds in every way. That summer I harvested more sweet peppers than ever before. It was my first try growing cantaloupes, so I have no previous crops to compare, but they did well and I harvested quite a few delicious, sun-sweetened cantaloupes from that bed.Meanwhile the flowers seemed to love the soil in my perennial bed, and they grew to huge proportions, filling in the space nicely by season's end.As promised, there was little watering and even less weeding. As a bonus, I never fertilized because the soil was already so rich in composting organic matter.Best of all, no soil-borne diseases! This was an organic gardener's paradise.

Author Patricia Lanza uses plenty of real-life examples from her own gardens to illustrate the effectiveness of this technique. She explains in detail how lasagna gardening differs from traditional tilling and double digging, what the benefits are and which crops need to wait while the layers compost down and which can be put in right away. There is an alphabetical listing of ways to plant annuals and seeds in lasagna beds, a plethora of tips on maximizing your space and innovating ways to grow vertically if need be.There are also garden plans for flower borders and perennial beds grouped according to watering and sunshine needs.

Please don't be afraid to break with "tradition" - you could save not only your garden tool budget, but your back as well. And if the promise of all those fruits, veggies and flowers with less work and more pleasure isn't enough for you, then you must really love that rototiller!
-Andrea, aka Merribelle

Review of Easy Green Living: The Ultimate Guide to Simple, Eco-Friendly Choices for You and Your Home (Paperback)

Every day I have questions about how to have a healthier household and family--how do I choose sunblock, do my laundry, be a responsible home owner, feed my children, choose a shampoo, a car, carpet, sheets....??Phew, it is endless. But Renee Loux, in her book Easy Green Living, presents you with all of the information and choices so you can make the most informed decision possible. Nobody wants to expose their children to toxic chemicals or dump toxins into the ocean, for example, but unwittingly, we continuously do. While reading Easy Green Living, instead of inciting a major freak-out (in me!) or sounding didactic, Loux takes a heartfelt, gentle, and passionate approach--encouraging baby steps (and grand leaps, if possible) of change towards a healthy, vitality-filled life.

I have already changed my household cleaning products and rituals. (My children now lovingly wipe the counters with citrus-smelling spray, because they like the smell.) And I am so motivated to change the other things in my life that are possible to change.Loux covers everything from linens and face cream, where to dump old cell phones to retrofitting toilets, safe cookware to curbing waste, deodorant, plastics, and energy efficient appliances.

Easy Green Living truly is an encyclopedia of knowledge, soundly researched (30+ pages of footnotes..Yikes!) that will stay in my kitchen for quick reference, when it's not on my bedside table for devouring before bed.

Product Description

We are what we eat, but we also are what we use to clean our homes, pamper our skin, and decorate our rooms, according to RenéeLoux, accomplished raw food chef, award-winning author, and host of Fine Living TV's Easy Being Green. In her new book, Easy Green Living, she applies her whole-foods philosophy to home, garden, and beauty routines.

Renée Loux demonstrates that being green at home is easy, affordable, and better in every sense of the word. She discusses the daily choices we face that can keep the home, personal care, and beauty routines free of toxins. She exposes the dirt on cleaning products and common hazardous ingredients and reveals her recommendations for greener options, including her "Green Thumb Guides" for choosing non-toxic, eco-smart, and human-friendly products. Peppered with compelling and inspiring facts, Easy Green Living is full of "5 Step" lists, products and recipes for green cleaning, helpful charts, safer choices for every room, and inspirational advice so we can save the planet--one cleaning spritz at a time.

As recent special issues of Vanity Fair, Time, Newsweek, and other major publications have demonstrated, going green is an idea whose time has come. Whether addressing big-picture topics like renewable energy, or offering simple suggestions for everyday living, this complete lifestyle guide shows that healthier choices don't mean a radical or complicated life change--it is, after all, easy to be green.

Review of Joey Green's Amazing Kitchen Cures: 1,150 Ways to Prevent and Cure Common Ailments with Brand-Name Products (Paperback)

Did you know that you can stop sunburn pain by adding Cheerios to your bathwater (please don't recycle!)? Also, stop a shaving nick or canker sore in it's tracks with Alum (a spice by McCormick). These and other bizzare but useful tips can be found in this new book by Joey Green, author of "Polish Your Furniture With Panty Hose" and "Clean Your Clothes with Cheez Whiz". Learn how, in a pinch, you can shave with Jif peanut butter, or use a credit card to scrape your tongue when out in public and plagued with hallitosis. Gatorade can cure a headache? You bet. Then, there are some no-brainers in here (e.g. use a Q-Tip as a substitute eye shadow applicator, shrink a zit with toothpaste- all us 80's girls know this one! But, I had no idea toothpaste could reduce redness and speed the healing of a hickey!)If you love waterproof mascara, but hate removing it, simply keep Johnson's baby Shampoo on hand and remove mascara with a small amount of it on a cottonball. This book also has "Strange Facts" at the end of each chapter; did you know Abe Lincoln's Mother died from drinking the milk of a cow that ate poisonous mushrooms? The phrase "cold shoulder" originated in the Middle Ages when Europeans fed unwanted guests leftover beef shoulder to get them to leave. If for no other reason, get this book and find out how using McCormick food coloring can help you clean your teeth better. A fun book, great to give as a gift.

Review of Deer-Resistant Landscaping: Proven Advice and Strategies for Outwitting Deer and 20 Other Pesky Mammals (Paperback)

In _Deer-Resistant Landscaping_, Neil Soderstrom has written much more than a how-to book about "Proven Advice and Strategies for Outwitting Deer and 20 Other Pesky Mammals," as his subtitle would suggest. He has provided a readable narrative spiced with over 400 of his photographs plus a great many more taken by his friends Lennie and Ushi Rue and others. The result is a feast for the eyes as well as a source of information for those seeking to protect their yards and gardens. Personal and other anecdotes enliven the antidotes against mammals ranging from armadillos and peccaries to voles and woodchucks. Chapter 23, really an appendix, not only profiles but also portrays 197 of the more than 1,000 deer-resistant plants discussed in the book, all in beautiful, living color. A multitude of maps shows which parts of the United States are home to the various varmints discussed in the narrative. Anyone the least bit disturbed by (or simply interested in) the animals discussed in this book will find it a great bargain at $23.95 US as well as a valuable source of information. (In the interest of self-disclosure, I should point out that I have called Neil a friend for more than 35 years and had a minuscule role in helping him with his research on pocket gophers, which he overgenerously recognized on pp. xi, 95, and 100, even going so far as to include a photograph of me and my wife on p. xii.)

Product Description
Every year, before they decide to take defensive action, vulnerable homeowners throughout North America suffer expensive damage as deer and various other pesky mammals devour their gardens and landscape plants. Deer-Resistant Landscaping arms homeowners with the proven strategies they need to repel and combat deer and 21 other troubling pests, from armadillos, chipmunks, and gophers to rabbits, raccoons, skunks, and squirrels. Outstanding features include: -strategies for every season and every size pest- from simple, low-cost home remedies, scare tactics, and deterrents to live trapping, barriers, and community action procedures suitable for more intense problems -interviews with and tips from regional gardening and wildlife control experts from coast to coast -encyclopedic coverage of more than 1,000 resistant plants-especially those least likely to be grazed upon or destroyed by deer, based on scientific studies and a consensus of gardening authorities throughout the continent -stunning full-color wildlife photography featuring deer and pest behaviors as well as solutions and deterrents With more than 400 of the author's own gorgeous wildlife photos as well as ones by the legendary naturalist Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III, the most published wildlife photographer in North America, Deer-Resistant Landscaping provides the most wide-ranging, authoritative, and helpful information on this topic ever assembled in one volume.

Review of The Woman's Book of Healing Herbs [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I really like this book. It's organized nicely, and is helpful in pairing diseases/problems with herbal therapies. It's interesting, and I like the illustrations, as well as many of the beauty products.I do have a couple problems with it though. The book contains a list of the 50 most common herbs, and while it does list some safety precautions, a lot of drug-herb interactions are missing. For instance Coumadin (Warfarin) is listed as interacting with willow bark in this book. But Warfarin also has interactions with ginseng, dang shen, devil's claw, garlic (in large amounts) and ginkgo biloba.A few of these drugs are even in the top 50 in this book, with no mention of the problems they can cause with Warfarin.I think this is a really negative aspect of this book, because people without a pharmacy or medical background might not know about such problems, and as some don't even consider herbals to be drugs (which they are!) they don't know to check for interactions, or even where to check if they wanted to.Another point the book fails to mention is that the FDA doesn't have guidelines for purity of herbal products the way it does for prescription and over-the-counter medication. So you might not be getting exactly what you think you are when you buy an herbal product. If you use this book, I would recommend asking your pharmacist what brand of herbs they suggest, because most pharmacists know which brands are more reliable than others. And also, you should always ask your doctor about taking herbals if you are on ANY medications, and when your pharmacist takes your medication history, tell them what you are on, too.Just because herbals are natural doesn't mean they are safe!

Included are popular herbs like echinacea for colds and St.-John's-wort for depression as well as up-and-coming herbs like kava-kava for anxiety and black cohosh for menopausal symptoms.

Review of Blended Medicine: How to Integrate the Best Mainstream and Alternative Remedies for Maximum Health and Healing (Paperback)

This is a unique and valuable bible of the current state of healing arts. The author has no political agenda. He does not favor 'alternative' vs 'Western' or 'traditional' medicine. He just objectively tells you what works and what does not work so well given specific health condition.

He allows you to attack any ailment you have with a multi-medicinal approach. For any given condition, this book makes insightful recommendation from ayuverdic, homeopathic, herbal, and traditional medicine.

It is unfortunate that within the medical establishment (the AMA) this 'Blended' approach has not taken hold.It is obviously much more successful than going at it from one limited perspective.

Thanks to this book though, it is like having your own in house doctor.

Review of Doctor's Book of Food Remedies [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I loved reading this book because it was packed with information on the foods we love.More than 9,000 scientific studies have proven beyond doubt that food is our best medicine. This book shows which foods are the most healing. In nature animals know which foods to nibble on to get well, with this book...we will too!

I think the best way to use this book is to completely read it cover to cover and write down every food you think you need. Then, try to incorporate those foods into your diet. Studies have identified 107 of the most powerful healing foods, spices and herbs. There are some compounds which just cannot be absorbed by the human bloodsteam unless they are eaten in a food.Taking ellagic acid (a cancer fighter) in a pill form doesn't work.It is essential to eat strawberries or other berries in order to obtain ellagic acid. After reading this book you will look at a stawberry pie in a new way.

"Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food." --Hippocrates, 400 B.C.

This book also gives helpful hints on how to select produce and keep it fresh. There is also some great information on how to prepare fruits and vegetables.

You will find great life saving information:

Eating cherries helps to prevent cancer, "perillyl alcohol" blocks the formation of a variety of cancers and contain a compound called quercetin. This neutralizes cancer-causing agents in the body.It also shields your DNA against cancer.

Eating red grapefruits will give you more "lycopene" which helps protect against heart disease.Ruby Red and Star Ruby are great choices.

"Diet has the distinction of being the only major determinant of health that is completely under your control." --Andrew Weil, M.D.

The recipes are easy to make and there are plenty of them. There are also plenty of great pictures to get you to the store!Blueberries anyone...

Review of Super Natural Home: Improve Your Health, Home, and Planet--One Room at a Time (Paperback)

Have you ever gone to the grocery store and heard someone complain about the expense of an organic food? You might run into them a few minutes later in the meat department selecting a 12-ounce T-bone steak with a price tag well over $10.00.Obviously, they aren't thinking about what they are getting for their money or they'd toss that steak back and buy the organic spinach.

Most of us have grown up making the wrong choices . . . water in plastic bottles, packaged foods with long lists of unidentifiable ingredients, and cleaning supplies strong enough to take the paint off the wall.

If you care about your health and the health of those you love, you will want to buy this book and then read it cover to cover.Inside this book is well-founded information which can help us avoid many of the toxic chemicals we can't see or taste, which are putting our health at risk for diseases and even death. If you're over 40, you probably have noticed (like I have) that you know many more people who are dying of cancer than when you were younger. There is a reason for that, my friends, and the toxic chemicals in our food and home is a definite contributor to our demise.

Beth Greer has become a well-known expert in this topic, and every page of her book tells us something we didn't already know.Would you have imagined that most of our garlic comes from China, and that it is whitened with bleach and injected with growth inhibitors to prevent sprouting?Don't look the other way . . . buy this book, get smart, and get healthy!

Lynette Fleming, Coauthor of Lunch Buddies: Buddy Up for a Better Diet

Product Description
Beth Greer had been living what she considered a healthy lifestyle when a medical crisis prompted her to reevaluate everything-from the food she ate to the personal-care products she used and the environment she lived in. Now, in Super Natural Home, she shows the alarming extent of the dangerous chemicals we unwittingly expose ourselves to every day. As she did in her own life, she invites readers to put their lives under a microscope-to scrutinize what Americans put in and on their bodies and bring into their homes-and to make personal choices that will enable them to "live clean" in a toxic world. The straightforward, solutions-based approach of Super Natural Home-complete with quizzes to help identify and correct potential toxic hot zones-speaks directly to what environment-conscious consumers really need: ultra-practical advice on what they can do right now to limit exposure to the poisons that are endangering them and their children. At a time when impeccable scientific research points to an alarming correlation between common chemical compounds and cancers, allergies, psychiatric disorders, and birth defects, among other serious health concerns, Super Natural Home gives consumers the tools to start protecting themselves and their families.

Review of Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats (Paperback)

I recently obtained Dr. Pitcairn's book and found it to be a wonderful, easy to implement and understand book on natural care for dogs and cats. Dr. Pitcairn provides concise information on dogs and cats from what to feed, to training, and even about how to choose a dog breed for your lifestyle. This book also has lots of natural prevention remedies included and how to PREVENT pesky problems like fleas and ticks from invading your home and your pets.

One of the things I educate pet owners on is prevention being the key and that is done through a strong immune system by feeding and supplementing properly. I always tell them that once your pet is diseased you'll need to see a veterinarian and then undo the illness and disease if you can, then build your pet back up. Dr. Pitcairn shares a lot about prevention and that thrilled me! That is the answer and key to keeping our pets healthy.

He shares about natural feeding which is another big issue I like to tackle with pet owners. He even includes grooming. This is a must have book for any dog or cat owner who wants to approach their pet care naturally and preventatively. Excellent book!
