Review of Bach Flower Remedies Form & Function (Paperback)

Flower Essences are not as well known as they should be.

Though there is precious little scientific research to support their use, there is a great deal of practical experience to show that they can be often be very useful complements to other forms of therapy.

This is an excellent book on the original Bach Essences. One would have thought that there is little new to be said about them, but there is much inthe book that is new and original.

Highly recommended.

Product Description
"Today, disease and death control us ever more strongly with a litany of viruses, cancers, and heart disorders. The causes may be vaccinations, environmental poisons, despoliation of food, or pollution of the elements-earth, water and air. For Bach the cause was clear and it is clear today: ‘It is only because we have forsaken Nature's way for man's way that we have suffered, and we have only to return to be released from our trials. In the presence of the way of Nature disease has no power; all fear, all depression, all hopelessness can be set aside. There is no disease of itself which is incurable.'" -Julian Barnard

In the 1920s, the physician and homeopath Dr. Edward Bach made his great discovery of the healing effects of various flower essences. Intense and revelatory, his experiences in nature resulted in thirty-eight "flower remedies." He describes these as bringing courage to the fearful, peace to the anguished, and strength to the weak. But the therapeutic effects of the remedies were never limited to emotional states. They are equally effective in the treatment of physical disorders.

Barnard begins the process of explaining this phenomenon. He describes how Bach made his discoveries and examines the living qualities of the plants in their context and how the remedies are actually produced. The result is remarkable. The author recounts his observations so that readers can experience, in a living way, the complex ways in which the remedy plants grow-their gestures and qualities, ecology, botany, and behavior.

This exciting book calls the reader to attend to nature in a new way. Fully illustrated.

Review of Bach Flower Remedies for Children: A Parents' Guide (Paperback)

I have always had my homeopathic remedies made by a pharmacy and was skeptical of remedies that could be purchased at a store.Well, when all else failed to work for me, I decided to try the Bach remedies and they worked! From there, I branched out into treating our cat and also my children.

This book is easy to understand and use.As most Flower Remedy books do, it starts with a short introduction. From there, it goes on to list the remedies alphabetically and to explain which sort of child would benefit. In a style that reminded me of Waldorf School educators, the author also included a short story to be told to the child related to their personality type.Very interesting.

At the end, there is a chart listing the remedies and the conditions each one can treat. This is a very useful reference. This chart differs from the chapters because it also lists physical problems, as well as emotional personality. For example, I looked under pimples for my daughter.Of course, Bach thought that physical problems all had emotional or psychological roots to begin with.

This is a book that I will consult over and over again. It is very well done.

Review of Asian Health Secrets: The Complete Guide to Asian Herbal Medicine (Paperback)

Asian Health Secrets by Letha Hadady, D.Ac., was recommended to me by an elder "kung fu brother" when I attended a very traditional kung fu school in Chinatown, NY.I knew very little of Asian medicinal theory so, I started with a fairly clean slate and couldn't have asked for a better foundation for learning about this rich tradition. The fact that His Holiness the Dalai Lama wrote the foreword speaks volumes in and of itself.

The book is written in a conversational manner that serves to gently ease the reader into learning about the Asian health perspective.Hadady, an absolute expert in this field, is also a talented teacher - she effectively conveys the complexities of Asian herbal medicine so that anyone who would read this book would "get it".She describes what an Asian herb is and how everything we consume, in addition to elements in our environment, act upon our energy, or chi (which she clearly explains as well). She addresses foods, herbs, and teas and explains in the text and in easy to read tables their energy and effect on the person and mind.

She explains Asian elements and humors and how they are expressed through our physical and mental health. There is also a fantastic cleansing program that is flexible in the amount of time and degree of dedication you wish to do it with. The program uses foods that are easily obtainable and suggestions for herbal products that are easy to get at a Chinese herb shop or through one of the suppliers listed in the back of the book (if you don't have the fortune of a local Chinatown). She also refers to remedies that are available at most health food stores.

She devotes a chapter to reading the tongue (an Asian method of diagnosis which I have personally found is uncanny in its accuracy). There are also chapters about weight loss, arthritis, headaches and toothaches, circulation, allergies, colds & flu, beauty, women's health (including PMS, menstruation, birth, menopause), energy, insomnia, sexuality, ginseng, depression and mental clarity among others.

Throughout the book, there are questionnaires so that you can find out what state your energy is in as it relates to the topic you're reading about. While the questionnaires are optional, they bring it all together because you can see how the material applies to you personally. You also begin to see how it applies to others - it's eye opening, really.

I have studied/read this book twice and refer to it all the time.I've also gone through all the questionnaires and am not too bad at figuring out which part of me is suffering and treating myself, whether through meals or herbs (including western herbs such as basil or Chinese herbal remedies). You'll understand why it's more than just traditional to eat things like salad in the summer and pumpkin pie with cloves and nutmeg in the fall.

I highly recommend this book because it's helped my family and me so much. They say that Asian doctors are held in high esteem not in the number of patients they treat but because their patients are healthy.Right on.I also recommend Letha Hadady's film, Asian Health Secrets (ISBN: 1-58350-240-8) where she goes to Chinatown, NY and visits vegetable vendors, restaurants and herb shops. She shows the viewer Chinese patent remedies and explains what they do which is a lovely compliment to this book. You can also tell from her beauty and radiant healthy presence that what she's doing works.

Product Description
Drawing on her own experience as well as dozens of case histories and the results of questionnaires, the author outlines safe, herbal remedies for problems ranging from colds, headaches, and insomnia to sexual dysfunction. Original. 25,000 first printing."

Review of The Way of Ayurvedic Herbs: A Contemporary Introduction and Useful Manual for the World's Oldest Healing System (Paperback)

This is my first time reading anything about Ayurvedic Medicine and after going through the book, I had cross-referenced its contents with some of my friends who have been implementing these practices in their life, amazingly they all agree with the information provided in this book. For example the use of Garlic, onion, and Ginger is the primary ingredient of almost every Indian household for many many years along with other spices..handed down from Mother to Daughter but no one ever questioned why these spices were the primary base of all the foods.. with this book it breaks down and explains detailed benefits of each of these tri-primary base of Indian food. Pretty good.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to change their life and live a longer healthy life.

Review of Spontaneous Healing : How to Discover and Embrace Your Body's Natural Ability to Maintain and Heal Itself (Mass Market Paperback)

Andrew Weil, who is a graduate of the Harvard Medical School and the author of a number of best-selling books on medicine, consciousness, health and diet, is one of those rare men who have managed to acquire a prestigious conventional education and then build on that with unconventional experiences in other parts of the world. He has studied botany and medicine in the Amazon jungle and elsewhere, and alternative medicine in the far east before establishing his practice in the United States. This book, first published in 1995, is the result of what Weil has learned over the years. There is nothing spectacularly new here, but there is a carefully presented, enormously compelling argument for the power of our bodies to heal themselves if only we would give them the opportunity.

Problem number one is a medical establishment that sees its interventions as the cause of healing, when it occurs, and the failure of the body, when it does not.Every physician should humbly realize that it is the healing mechanisms of the body that defeat disease, not the treatment.Weil makes this point even in the case of antibiotics: "Antibiotics reduce numbers of invading germs to a point where the immune system can take over and finish the job.The real cause of the cure is the immune system, which may be unable to end an infection because it is overwhelmed by sheer numbers of bacteria and" their toxic products (p. 110).I would add that even in the case of setting a bone or removing a bullet, it is the body that does the healing.Properly understood, Weil advises, the function of the physician is to aid the defenses of the body. This is how medicine is understood in cultures of ancient linage around the world, particularly in the time-honored Chinese and Ayurvedic systems. There is much we could learn from them. The tech-heavy Western approach fails to treat the whole patient--mind, body, emotions and spirit--and therefore has great difficulty in dealing with chronic illnesses.Weil emphasizes prevention, and when illness does occur, the cultivation of habits and a lifestyle conducive to spontaneous healing.

Included in the text are a number of testimonials of spontaneous healing from people given up on by conventional medicine.Dr. Weil is fascinated by these "anecdotal" cases and believes that the medical establishment is missing something by dismissing them because they cannot be scientifically validated.Weil counts heads and comes to the obvious conclusion that something is going on here, whether it can be baselined and graphed or not.People do indeed get well for no apparent reason. There are literately thousands of documented cases. How does this happen?Weil calls it the phenomenon of "spontaneous healing," and believes that we are all capable of performing this "miracle."Personally, it happened to me (if you'll forgive the Yogi Berra-ism) at my daughter's wedding.I had strained the instep of my right foot playing basketball and it would not heal.Weeks went by.I either could not stay off it enough and/or I was re-injuring it to the point where I could not walk without pain.A friend and I walked around the Stanford campus during the day, which I should not have done. The pain was very annoying, but in the evening, fortified with the festive occasion and the refreshments, I danced wildly, joyously, one might say, ignoring the pain, realizing that I would pay for it the next day.But in the morning when I woke up there was no pain at all, and although it has been almost ten years, the pain has never returned.

Not exactly a miracle, but proof enough to me that spontaneous healing is a reality.

What Dr. Weil does here, relying on his wisdom and experience, is to present a program of right practice, right habit, right diet, and right attitude (e.g., "Regard illness as a gift...a powerful stimulus to change...[an] opportunity...for personal growth and development..." p. 251) that will, he believes, greatly increase anyone's chance of healing spontaneously.(Chapter 17, "Seven Strategies of Successful Patients" is a precise prescription.)I think he makes a cogent and compelling case. And, as usual, his felicity of expression, almost meditative in tone and effect, is a huge plus.Weil has a gift for making the spiritual and mysterious aspects of our existence seem the very bedrock of rationality!Noteworthy is a chapter on "Medical Pessimism" in which Weil argues that conventional doctors consciously or unconsciously infect their patients with a reverse placebo with their negative attitudes."Simply put: too many doctors are deeply pessimistic about the possibility of people getting better, and they communicate their pessimism to patients and families" (P. 59). He calls this "medical hexing" (p. 64).He adds, on page 61, "So-called voodoo death is the ultimate example of a negative placebo response."

Weil believes that the pessimism of the medical profession has its roots in "the lopsided nature of medical education, which focuses almost exclusively on disease and its treatment rather than on health and its maintenance...the word <healing> is used rarely...the term <healing system> not at all."

This last point, I believe, points directly to what is the central problem with conventional medicine in this country.Medical schools are too exclusive and expensive, preventing many people who would truly love to help others from attending.Their programs are also flawed because of a too narrowly focused curriculum that ignores the thousands of years of experience of practitioners from around the world. The emphasis is on the exclusivity and status of the profession and not on the healing arts.Dr. Weil, because he is a rare product of that system, is a man especially to be listened to.I consider this book a "quiet classic" that someday will be recognized as a catalyst that helped revolutionize conventional medical practice. At least I hope so.
