Review of How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe's Poorest Nation Created Our World & Everything in It (Paperback)

Some of his more dour Scottish readers may very well tell Arthur Herman that he's mixing in a little bit of nonsense here. HOW THE SCOTS INVENTED THE MODERN WORLD is a glowing tribute to the Scots but he does go over the top a bit in giving them credit for more than they actually achieved, and also more than the Scot's ever claimed for themselves.

This book however is a serious study of Scotland in the 18th century, particularly the period following the Act of Union with England in 1707 known as the Scottish Enlightenment. THE SCOTTISH ENLIGHTENMENT is actually the book's UK title but that doesn't mean too much to us here. Far more eye-catching and interesting sounding is the title used for the US edition. This however creates a problem for the author. Its pop-culture sounding theme gives the impression that we will be engaged in competitive national chest-beating such as HOW THE IRISH SAVED CIVILIZATION and comparing lists of who accomplished what as in SPREZZATURA: 50 WAYS ITALIAN GENIUS SHAPED THE WORLD. Here the Scots supposedly not only CREATED OUR WORLD [but also] EVERYTHING IN IT!. Such claims don't allow the book to be taken very seriously but that is exactly how Herman wants it to be read. It's therefore a credit to him that his presentation of the facts and his arguments are good enough to allow him to make his point.

If we were to compile lists, one that would show Scottish prowess would be that of great thinkers of the 18th century. Start with Adam Smith, David Hume, Walter Scott, James Watt and Lord Kelvin. There is also John Stuart Mill. Those who were less thinkers and inventors but doers were David Livingstone and Scottish-Americans such as John Muir and Andrew Carnegie. It is the presence of transplanted Scots like Carnegie which underlies one of the authors main points. They are the "true inventors" of "modernity" because theycarried their beliefs with them as they settled around the world. Thus the roots of the Western traditions of individualism, democracy, and capitalism can all be traced back to Scotland.

It's an interesting argument carried off with much bravado and assured writing on the part of the author. To the extent that he stays away from the stereotypes such as the thrifty, penny-pinching Scot we can be thankful. This is a guid book and as a bairn of the Campbell's of Argyll on my mother's side I am pleased that this book has helped me ken a lot more about Scotland.

Review of More 101 Best Home-Based Businesses for Women (Paperback)

This is a really interesting book, although some of the businesses arekind of far-fetched (bison breeder???) but the ideas are cool. I wouldreccomend this more as a guide to side careers, most of them are risky ortake a lot of time to get off the ground. Also most of them seem to bebased around larger cities' needs.

Review of The Allergy Solution for Dogs: Natural and Conventional Therapies to Ease Discomfort and Enhance Your Dog's Quality of Life (The Natural Vet) (Paperback)

I write MacAnswers, a question/answer column for Great Scots Magazine, a publication for Scottish Terrier owners. The question I wanted to tackle for the September/October issue was about allergies. However, I was tempted to put that subject on the back burner since entire books can be written on allergies in dogs and how to control them.Fortunately, I found Dr. Messonnier's book The Allergy Solution for Dogs. This new book does indeed provide the solution for dog owners who are willing to invest more time and interest in solving their dog's discomfort than a monthly trip to the vet for a steroid injection. Dr. Messonnier's holistic approach to allergies makes sense, and I highly recommend this book to any dog owner who is dealing with the frustrations of a dog that itches and itches.Breeds the book lists which have an especially high incidence of atopic dermatitis, a genetic disease which predisposes dogs to skin allergies are: West Highland White Terriers, Cairn Terriers, Shar-peis, Scottish Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, Wirehaired Fox Terriers, Dalmatians, Pugs, Irish Setters, Boston Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, English Setters, Labrador Retrievers, Miniature Schnauzers and Belgian Tervurens.

Review of 100 Questions Every First-Time Home Buyer Should Ask: With Answers from Top Brokers from Around the Country (Paperback)

I happily endorse this book. The new second edition contains many new questions from the first edition, revised many other questions, and completely rewrites every answer.Things are changing fast in residential real estate, and this book will bring you up-to-date.Whether you are a first-time buyer, first-time seller, or haven't bought a home in at least five years, this book will serve your needs very well. The questions are drawn from those that brokers report that first-time buyers most often ask.The answers draw upon the experiences of many brokers.

How much training does it take to become a librarian, teacher, lawyer, physician, or rocket scientist? How well would the world work for us if such training were skimped on?

When it comes to buying a first home (whether condo, co-op, or fixer-upper), most people act as though you can do brain surgery without the training. Not!

Even if you view this emotionally and financially important investment as one to be approached carefully, most first-time buyers will make important errors. Here are a few of my favorites:

(1) Not thinking about how hard it may be to resell the home.

(2) Vastly underestimating how much money will be needed to fix it up.

(3) Overpaying for the home because of not realizing how to negotiate.

(4) Waiting until finding one's soul mate before purchasing.

(5) Spending more than you can afford, and using boxes for furniture.

(6) Purchasing a home that doesn't fit your needs (where will you put 4 children and you in 2 bedrooms?).

(7) Taking on a horrible commute.

Interest rates are down in light of the terrible terrorist tragedy and weak economy.Unemployment is rising.Based on historical patterns, this is a good time to buy.Are you ready?Probably not, even if you think you are.

But I have good news for you.If you read and apply the lessons of this book, you will be more ready than many people who have already bought homes.

The subjects covered include deciding what you needs are, versus your likes; how to look; determining what you can afford; deciding what broker to use; how to work with the broker (especially what not to tell the broker, since most work for the seller); how to decide what to offer; how to negotiate; getting the best financing; checking out the house; handling the closing; and even dealing with problems after the closing. You also get help with which professionals (such as buying agents, lawyers, and home inspectors) to use, how to select them, what they will cost, and how to work with them.

I have bought or helped buy three houses, am an attorney, and am a licensed real estate agent.I found several areas where this excellent book extended my knowledge.I know it will save you thousands of dollars . . . and probably even more in avoided emotional trauma!

The book does this by posing questions, providing worksheets, steering you to Internet resources, and describing case histories.

No book from the buyer's perspective can however hope to dispel the incredible naiveté that we all have when we first purchase a home (all 2 million a year who are like lambs being led to the slaughter). For that purpose, I suggest that you also read another book, How to Sell Your Home Fast, which is an excellent description of what intelligent, prepared sellers will be doing to get you to buy their home and pay too much.Beneath all the friendly chit-chat with the sellers, realize that your are usually being carefully maneuvered to act against your own interest.

By the way, this book does not do enough to warn you about hidden house faults.Home inspectors are not the entire answer. They usually get their referrals from brokers, and will usually not tell you the worst of what can happen lest brokers stop recommending them.Spend some extra money and have people you know well and trust who are expert in electrical, heating, air conditioning, structural, roofing, plumbing, soil, and environmental hazards take a look also. They will find things that you can use to get the price lowered to cover the cost of repairs. My experience is that you will save about [amt.] for every [amt.] you spend in this way.

I also recommend that you find 10 people who are a lot like you who purchased a home similar to what interests you about five years ago.Ask them what they did right and what didn't work out so well.

After you explore all of these choices, you may want to consider what I did once . . . rent with an option to purchase. All of my rent went towards the down payment.I found I loved the house, saved money, and had few problems with repairs.I later sold it for a nice profit.

Also, spend time in the yard of your potential new home at all hours of the day and night. You may be surprised by some of the positive and negative features. In one home, I discovered that a dozen deer came by across a creek at 7:30 a.m.Seeing them every morning became my favorite part of every day.

After preparing by knowing what the right questions are, look for all of the potential problems and opportunities in making large decisions. Then sleep on your decision for three nights. You'll know what to do then!

Review of The Complete Home Learning Source Book: The Essential Resource Guide for Homeschoolers, Parents, and Educators Covering Every Subject from Arithmetic to Zoology (Paperback)

When I borrowed this book from the library I actually read it cover tocover. It is more than just a list of books.Rebecca Rupp has doneexhaustive research. She has given the home schooler (or the parentwishing to augment the education of their kids) a tremendous resource. Rupp has divided the book up into different sections according tosubject-not just the three 'Rs, but also such things as philosophy, art,music...you name it.The age suggestions seem very accurate as well. Since people home school for a lot of different reasons, she also mentionsif a book is religious or Christian, or a purely secular resource.I haveused many of the websites that she lists, as well as sending away for anumber of the catalogs that she lists. As someone relatively new to thehome school scene, I also enjoyed the personal accounts of her three sons'educational experiences.I borrowed the book from our library first, buthave since purchased my very own copy!

Review of Asian Health Secrets: The Complete Guide to Asian Herbal Medicine (Paperback)

Asian Health Secrets by Letha Hadady, D.Ac., was recommended to me by an elder "kung fu brother" when I attended a very traditional kung fu school in Chinatown, NY.I knew very little of Asian medicinal theory so, I started with a fairly clean slate and couldn't have asked for a better foundation for learning about this rich tradition. The fact that His Holiness the Dalai Lama wrote the foreword speaks volumes in and of itself.

The book is written in a conversational manner that serves to gently ease the reader into learning about the Asian health perspective.Hadady, an absolute expert in this field, is also a talented teacher - she effectively conveys the complexities of Asian herbal medicine so that anyone who would read this book would "get it".She describes what an Asian herb is and how everything we consume, in addition to elements in our environment, act upon our energy, or chi (which she clearly explains as well). She addresses foods, herbs, and teas and explains in the text and in easy to read tables their energy and effect on the person and mind.

She explains Asian elements and humors and how they are expressed through our physical and mental health. There is also a fantastic cleansing program that is flexible in the amount of time and degree of dedication you wish to do it with. The program uses foods that are easily obtainable and suggestions for herbal products that are easy to get at a Chinese herb shop or through one of the suppliers listed in the back of the book (if you don't have the fortune of a local Chinatown). She also refers to remedies that are available at most health food stores.

She devotes a chapter to reading the tongue (an Asian method of diagnosis which I have personally found is uncanny in its accuracy). There are also chapters about weight loss, arthritis, headaches and toothaches, circulation, allergies, colds & flu, beauty, women's health (including PMS, menstruation, birth, menopause), energy, insomnia, sexuality, ginseng, depression and mental clarity among others.

Throughout the book, there are questionnaires so that you can find out what state your energy is in as it relates to the topic you're reading about. While the questionnaires are optional, they bring it all together because you can see how the material applies to you personally. You also begin to see how it applies to others - it's eye opening, really.

I have studied/read this book twice and refer to it all the time.I've also gone through all the questionnaires and am not too bad at figuring out which part of me is suffering and treating myself, whether through meals or herbs (including western herbs such as basil or Chinese herbal remedies). You'll understand why it's more than just traditional to eat things like salad in the summer and pumpkin pie with cloves and nutmeg in the fall.

I highly recommend this book because it's helped my family and me so much. They say that Asian doctors are held in high esteem not in the number of patients they treat but because their patients are healthy.Right on.I also recommend Letha Hadady's film, Asian Health Secrets (ISBN: 1-58350-240-8) where she goes to Chinatown, NY and visits vegetable vendors, restaurants and herb shops. She shows the viewer Chinese patent remedies and explains what they do which is a lovely compliment to this book. You can also tell from her beauty and radiant healthy presence that what she's doing works.

Product Description
Drawing on her own experience as well as dozens of case histories and the results of questionnaires, the author outlines safe, herbal remedies for problems ranging from colds, headaches, and insomnia to sexual dysfunction. Original. 25,000 first printing."

Review of Standing for Something: 10 Neglected Virtues That Will Heal Our Hearts and Homes (Paperback)

I finished reading this book yesterday.

After 25 years in law enforcement, I have seen the "dark side" of America.Any person, Christian, Jew, Athiest, Buddist or of whatever belief or non-belief, coulddo well in living the principles presented in this book.

I had thousandsof negative contacts while working the streets of Phoenix as a policeofficer.Every one of those negative contacts can be attributed to aviolation of one or more of these principles. The prisons are full ofpeople who have not been taught, or, who have failed to live, theprinciples in this book.

What would the world be like if starting here inAmerica, we could live these virtues.

I read the previous reviews and itseems many are hung up on the messenger. Why should it matter who deliversthe truth.Either we would be better off being honest or not.Either wewould be better off being morally clean or not. Either we would be betterof being civil to each other or not.

Is it possible to live theseprinciples every day. I don't think so.Would we all be better off tryingto live them every day.Yes.If we fail to live them today, we can tryagain tomorrow. After all, forgiveness and mercy are virtues. If weforgive ourselves for our shortcomings today, we can try again.

WillRogers once spoke about money and getting interest for money placed in abank. He said "Them that gets it, gets it, and them that don't,don't."

This book is that way.

Review of Veterinarians Guide to Natural Remedies for Cats : Safe and Effective Alternative Treatments and Healing Techniques from the Nations Top Holistic Veterinarians (Paperback)

I can not say enough good things about this book.I refer to it more times a day than I can count. It contains vital informationthat all pet lovers should know, from the quality of foods we feed them to the treatments for illnesses they get.I unfortunatly got this book after I lost my beautiful Ragdoll cat to fatty liver disease.Had I gotten it while he was alive I believe there could have been hope to save him.I still have three other cats though and this book is my "Bible" when it comes to their care.My other Ragdoll was on a "prescription" diet that was supposed to be good for her. After 4 months of diarrhea (that the vet kept giving pills for which did no good), I found this book.I changed her diet, gave her milk thistle, some probiotics (for one week), and she made a 100 percent turn around. This book also contains many telephone numbers where you can order herbs if you aren't lucky enough to live in an area where pet health stores (or people health stores) are available. I highly recommed this book.It is informative, thorough and will really open your eyes to your pets health.

Review of Better Basics for the Home: Simple Solutions for Less Toxic Living (Paperback)

I'm single, a downtown apartment dweller, and I've been using natural, homemade cleaning products for almost three years. I have read - and use regularly - several natural cleaning books, including another of Annie Berthold-Bond's titles, "Clean & Green." However, I have become interested in "green living," not just cleaning. That means switching from commercial household products to homemade products for personal care, pest control, etc. That is what led me to "Better Basics For the Home."

"Better Basics" is far easier to use and much better organized and written than "Clean & Green." It is set up in logical sections according to the products' uses. The index is very good. You can find a recipe quickly, although I would suggest you read through the book once and get a feel for how to go about things. Also, one of the best aspects is the "Sources and Resources" section near the back. If you live in an area without health food stores, woods or land suitable for growing your own herbs, then this will be essential for your ability to find ingredients to make your own green household products.

This book is also suitable for the beginner green cleaner. Most of the recipes, once you have the correct ingredients, are very easy to make and quick to put together. That being said, this book is also for people who are really serious about green cleaning, personal hygiene, pest control and other aspects of running a household. I say that because some of the ingredients used in many of the recipes are costly if you have to buy them instead of gathering them from your yard or a nearby wooded area. Also, essential oils - literally essential in green cleaning! - are expensive. (A little goes a loooong way, though.) This is a lot more than vinegar-baking soda-Castille soap cleaning and requires a higher level of commitment financially.

As a single person, I also found that many of the recipes, especially the ones that are highly perishable, would make too much for me to use in the time they are fresh. Of course, the easy way to get around this is to simply cut the recipes in half or even a quarter. If you can cook or do some simple math (I'm terrible at math and I have no troubles), then you as a single person can cut the recipes down to a manageable, useful amount. I have already cleaned my leather couch, made lanolin hand lotion (great stuff!) and protected my hemp shower curtain from mildew with a spray-on solution containing tea tree oil. How long did it take? I did it effortlessly in one day, around other chores. Very easy.

I would recommend, if you are really interested in green cleaning by desire or necessity, to buy this book and also get "Clean House, Clean Planet" by Karen Logan. To me, Logan's book is the single best way to get someone involved in green cleaning. Her recipes tend to be cheap, easy and effective. This book has a far greater range of recipes for many more uses, but they are overall more expensive and specialized.

Also, a few tips if you are going to get into green cleaning:

1) Get equipment that is used only in making your cleaning products. Some essential oils and other ingredients are very bad for you to eat, and mixups and residues could make your day very long and very bad. I have a simple list: a medium-sized Pyrex bowl and 2-cup Pyrex measure, a silicone spatula, *metal* measuring spoons, a whisk and some glass jars with metal screw-on lids you can get at any decent-sized grocery store. With about $20-$30, you can have nearly all the equipment you will ever need.

2) Start with one product that is cheap and easy to make, and works on something you want to clean right now. Instant gratification is a great way to get into the habit!

3) Especially if you want to clean rather than make personal care products at first, buy one small bottle of essential oil that smells good AND disinfects to cut down costs. I happen to like tea tree oil, but if you prefer a wintergreen type smell, choose lavender. If you find out that green cleaning is for you, then you can branch out into other essential oils more suited for other tasks.

Review of Veterinarians Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs : Safe and Effective Alternative Treatments and Healing Techniques from the Nations Top Holistic Veterinarians (Paperback)

Martin Zucker has interviewed over thirty holistic vets for this book. They share which supplements, dietary changes, herbs, homeopathic remedies, or flower essences they have found to be effective for conditions rangingfrom arthritis and cancer to parasites and yeast infections. If you'vebeen into natural rearing for a while, few of the suggestions will be newto you, but the book is nonetheless a nice resource.
In addition tothe A-Z index of canine health problems and suggested natural remedies, there are brief chapters introducing various holistic therapies (herbs, nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedies, flower essences, acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage techniques), plus chapters onvaccinations/titers and nutrition. However, while it's great that theholistic vets interviewed for this book are advocating fresh food diets, the information presented in the chapter on homemade meals is notsufficient to enable anyone to prepare a balanced homemade diet for theirdog(s).For properly balanced fresh food diet plans, check out books byBillinghurst, Volhard, or Pitcairn.I also have to disagree with thesection on feeding bones -- in my experience with natural dog rearing andas an animal nutrition consultant I have found that softer, raw bones suchas chicken necks or backs that are consumed in their entirety are far saferthan the big, hard beef bones recommended in the book.

Review of Feng Shui and Health: The Anatomy of a Home: Using Feng Shui to Disarm Illness, Accelerate Recovery, and Create Optimal Health (Paperback)

in 1999 I read Nancy SantoPietro's first book, and was so interested that I called her for a consultation.I was very unhappy with job, my home, my health - Nancy took the time to explain why Black Hat Sect Feng Shui works and how it worked and gave me a list of things to do.Well since that time, I have a new job, my apt. is always neat - no stagnant energy - and lo and behold, my bouts with bronchitis have ceased. When this new book came out, I was eager to buy it and read it, because it makes so much sense. It is honest, readable, and you can tell that she wrote the book wanting to help people, not just because Feng Shui is "hot" right now. She is one practitioner that really cares about her clients.I highly recommend her as a Feng Shui practitioner and both her books are very, very easy to read and her advice is also easy to follow. My life has improved tremendously since SantoPietro's Feng Shui expertise touched my life and I hope others will be encouraged to read her books so they too can be helped!

Review of The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies (Paperback)

This book is the first one I've read on Ayurveda which makes immediate sence. Written in a practical straight forward way, It is obvious the author genuinely cares about his readers.
I have tried several cures listed in the book, they have provided better and faster relief than any drugs. There is one for sinus headache (pg 250) that worked in less than 10 min. And the best story of all, is one he lists for food allergies which has allowed me to eat dairy and wheat again. This book has changed my life. I have been independantly studying holistic medicine for the past 9 years, and this book is a fast leap forward in my awareness of the field of alternative treatments.
I only hope to be able to meet Dr. Lad some day and offer my gratitude.

Sincerely

Eric Lloyd
