Review of The Last Full Measure (Mass Market Paperback)

Jeff Shaara follows in his father's footsteps ... big shoes to fill indeed! He does a highly admirable job of researching and writing about the heroes, both North and South, who fought during the last two years of the Civil War. This book provides the reader a ring-side seat to key battles and positions, as each side fights to their last full measure of strength. The reader is provided personal information about the lives of the major players: General Robert E. Lee, General Ulysses S. Grant, and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. We get inside the hearts and minds of these soldiers and although fiction it rings true to life. Historical fiction is a marvelous method to learn aboutdetailed and important battles which became turning points in this most fundamental war in the history of the United States.

Most impressive descriptions are provided as General Robert E. Lee struggles in his heart and soul to send his valorous troops against the much better equipped Northern soldiers. We learn how strategy and insight gave the South advantages over technology and numbers, in the beginning. We learn that after Gen. Ulysses S. Grant was given command of the North, the tides turned ... and the reasons why. Maps are provided which give proper visualization to the word descriptions of strategic locations and key battles. Divided into four parts, the prolog to each section uses the words of President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg address very effectively. Each section includes descriptions of a wide range of events, thorough analysis, and human emotions for the years of the war and post war events that it covers.

The book goes beyond the war to include descriptons of when President Lincoln is shot. It concludes with an afterward that gives a wonderful summary of the post-war lives of major participants both Blue and the Gray. Reading this book was truly an eye-opening experience, filled with illuminating moments and unforgettable real people. It leaves the reader hungry to read more about the subject It compelled me to buy more books by this author - for example, "Gone for Soldiers" (the Mexican War) and "Rise to Rebellion" (the American Revolutionary War). Review of Life in the Left Lane (Paperback)

No typical tourist guide is this. Emy Thomas provides a refreshingly frank account of life in St. Croix. She deals directly with the pleasant the beaches, the people, the pace of life and the sometimes unpleasant hurricanes, and occasional crime.

Emy Thomas has found her own way to enjoy this island paradise. Hers is no superficial experience. She enjoys St. Croix in all its richness. Not for her an imposing mini castle in an expatriate enclave. She goes out of her way to live modestly yet comfortably. She knows some creole, and is deeply involved in local social initiatives. She seems to blend and integrate with the majority West Indian population much better than could be expected of the stereotypical New Yorker. She joins the locals in laughing off the perpetualGovernment inefficiencies, rather thangetting upset. But her journalist background is not entirely forgotten. She still manages to take a few swipes at local politicians.

If you know St. Croix already, you will readily identify with Emy Thomas perspectives and sense of humor. If you ever wondered what a Caribbean retirement would be like - read this before you decide. It will prepare your mind, and most likely will make you want to do it even more.

Product Description
A short and lively non-fiction book about what it?

About the Author
Emy Thomas spent her first thirty-three years following a typical middle-class path, growing up in Connecticut, graduating from prestigious schools in the northeast, and working as a journalist in New York City. Then she discovered the tropics and has embraced the islands and their laid-back lifestyle ever since. For over a dozen years home was a sailboat, when she cruised throughout the Caribbean and Pacific with a typical 'yachtie,' who made wandering a way of life. They visited scores of island paradises. When it was time to leave the boat and settle down the author chose St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands as her permanent home. She built her dream house on a hillside overlooking the Caribbean Sea and finally found her true calling as an author. Her first book, Home Is Where the Boat Is, was published in 1993. Life in the Left Lane is her second book.

Review of If You Had Controlling Parents: How to Make Peace with Your Past and Take Your Place in the World (Paperback)

This book is one of the best self help books I have read in a long time.It dealt more with the emotional than the physical abuse in childhood.I have always had a hard time because to me emotional abuse specially whenmixed with religion can be so easily justified in your mind. You can feellike "something is really wrong here", but then in the samebreath say "well they love me so much and are just obeying God andwhat he requires of parents".I have been eaten up with guilt for therebellion against my parents that I displayed as a teenager. Now though Irealize I rebelled against their control, not against them inorder to hurtthem or make them miserable.I read this book, started seeing a therapistand confronted my parents and let me tell you how much freedom I feel forthe first time in life.I actually feel happy, and a great sense of hope. What do I owe my parents? Why am I so fearful of hurting their feelings? Why can't I just do what is healthy for me? The book answered thesequestions and the exercises were wonderful. We need more books like thisone because obviously there is a problem in parenting that needs to belooked at and changed fast!Kids are becoming more violent, lessrespectful of authority, and completely losing any conscience what-so-ever. So if I can break the generation sin that has been passed down forgenerations, then I am thankful I was put in the home I was put in andstrong enough to SURVIVE!

Review of The Gay Science: With a Prelude in Rhymes and an Appendix of Songs (Mass Market Paperback)

This book contains the famous description of the madman announcing theDeath of God.Obviously Nietzsche sees himself as the madman, sacrificinghimself to bring humanity the awful news. What's odd is that Nietzsche wascertainly not the first person to proclaim God's death; in fact, as hehimself notes elsewhere, many educated people had already become eitheragnostic or atheistic.None of them, however, found this as earthshakingas Nietzsche. The reason, I think, is that he had an essentially religiousnature. The word "spiritual" recurs throught the book.In oneremarkable passage he even chastises St. Augustine for being insufficientlyspiritual.

The Gay Science is a pivitol book for Nietzsche because it isthe first in which the tension between the spiritual seeker and the atheistbecomes manifest.Gone is the skeptical pose of "Human All TooHuman"; instead we have the anguish of a man torn between twoconflicting ideals. The tension, while it ravaged Nietzsche, did producesome brilliant ideas and unforgettable prose, even if it did not ultimatelylead to a liveable philosophy.

Review of Thread of Fear (Mass Market Paperback)

Laura Griffin strikes gold with her third book, Thread of Fear.Fiona Glass is a forensic artist, the best in the business. She no longer wants her job.The haunted faces of the killers and victims she's sketched over the years have taken their toll. But police chief Jack Bowman isn't an easy man to deny.Jack needs Fiona's expertise to help put a serial killer who's targeting young girls behind bars.He appeals to Fiona's sense of justice and successfully convinces her to help him.But as they work together, Fiona becomes more important to Jack than he ever imagined she could.~~~~~~~~~Thread of Fear is the first book I've ever read more than once.Yes, it is that good! The writing is tight, the story is explosive and the tension kept me turning pages long into the night.I had no choice.I had to find out what happened.Right from the start, Ms. Griffin's talent took me inside the story and gave me a front row seat to all the emotions Fiona and Jack experience while tracking the killer and fighting their attraction to each other. And I have to mention Fiona's sister, Courtney.Ms. Griffin created such a wonderfully complicated character in Courtney, I couldn't help liking her and I'm already looking forward to her story in Whisper of Warning. The next time you're in the bookstore, make sure to pick up Thread of Fear.I promise you won't be disappointed!

Jack never intended for Fiona to become so deeply involved in the case -- or in his life. But every instinct tells him she's his best hope for finding a psychopath who's lurking in plain sight, growing more ruthless with each passing day. And now that Fiona is right in the killer's crosshairs, the only way to keep her safe is to unravel a small town's darkest secrets, one terrifying thread at a time....

Review of FDR (Paperback)

FDR, by Jean Edward Smith, proves that no highly significant historical figure or event is beyond a great writer's ability to improve a particular body of literature.Indeed FDR is a towering work of both writing and scholarship.Smith again proves he is one of our foremost biographers and captures, in a very evenhanded way, the very essence of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Indeed, this writing is up there with David Herbert Donald's Lincoln. Both took on truly larger than life topics and did so with energy and vigor.

The footnoting in FDR is highly extensive and the curious reader will look at many of them and make notes to read on additional topics as Smith piques the interest of any with any significant interest in Roosevelt. He, like Lincoln, was the President in a time where it is difficult to imagine, even for his critics, another person assuming the role.Smith explains and documents almost all of FDR's life and gives very plausible reasons for his rather radical views at the time, especially for one with his Hudson River pedigree. He tackles his many physical challenges, his relationship with his peripatetic wife Eleanor (see Doris Kearns Goodwin's No Ordinary Time) , his affair with Lucy Mercer Rutherford, his intimate relationship with Churchill (see Jon Meacham's Franklin and Winston) and his reliance on a cast of eclectic personal and political operatives over the years. All of his public years are well covered, perhaps even more so his early years in New York politics.

There is very little, if nothing to criticize about this book. One could make an argument that Smith tried too hard to keep it a readable 636 pages with and additional 221 pages of notes and an exhaustive bibliography.Maybe two volumes would have improved this work, but that is sheer conjecture. This book must be read by all with more than a passing interest in 20th Century American history.Simply sublime.

Review of Caring for Patients from Different Cultures (Paperback)

As Director of Nursing for a small, rural county health department, I was looking for cultural information on dealing with Hispanic populations. What this book covers is all of that and more.It was a real eye opener! Ms.Galanti gives case synopses on caring for patients from many diversecultures. She covers cultural differences with nutrition, religion, familysupport, response to pain, and a wealth of other topics.I purchased thisbook for our staff library, and a copy for myself and my nurse-mother.Anyone who deals with people from other cultures(not just health careproviders) needs to read this book!

Product Description

What happens when a Cherokee patient summons a medicine man to the hospital, or when an Anglo nurse refuses to take orders from a Japanese doctor? Why do Asian patients rarely ask for pain medication, while Mediterranean patients seem to seek relief for even the slightest discomfort?

If the goal of the American medical system is to provide optimal care for all patients, healthcare providers must understand cultural differences that create conflicts and misunderstandings and can result in inferior medical care. Geri-Ann Galanti's updated classic, Caring for Patients from Different Cultures, is even more comprehensive than the first three editions, containing new appendices for quick reference, an expanded and updated bibliography with Internet resources, and a detailed index.

Caring for Patients from Different Cultures contains more than 200 case studies illustrating crosscultural misunderstanding and culturally competent health care. The chapters cover a wide range of topics, including birth, end of life, traditional medicine, mental health, pain, religion, and multicultural staff issues. The case studies illustrate important concepts from the fields of cultural diversity and medical anthropology. This volume is an important resource for nurses and physicians in achieving cultural competency.

Review of McGee & Stuckey's Bountiful Container: Create Container Gardens of Vegetables, Herbs, Fruits, and Edible Flowers (Paperback)

Finally, here's a book on container gardening that focuses on vegetables (and also herbs, fruits and edible flowers). I was tired of looking through tons and tons of books on container gardening that were full of stuff about houseplants and flowers but had zilch when it came to the edible stuff. Was vegetable gardening out of bounds for apartment dwellers like me? I thought so till I came across this book. This book is a godsend for people who want kitchen gardens of their own but who can only garden with containers.
The book has no photos, only illustrations (but then again, who needs another coffee table kind of book with pretty pictures and little content) but it has lots of good advice and instructions. It starts off with the basics (container types, soil, fertilizing, pests etc.), then it moves on to a hefty section each on vegetables, herbs, fruits and edible flowers. Each section has a number of entries with detailed instructions on the particular veggie/herb/fruit/flower in question. These include stuff like planting, fertilizing, soil depth, plant size, light requirements and so on. Interspersed throughout the book are interesting projects, for example, creating a garden for children or a kitchen garden with an asian/italian/greek theme. All in all, this book is extremely useful and a real treasure.

Product Description
With few exceptions-such as corn and pumpkins-everything edible that's grown in a traditional garden can be raised in a container. And with only one exception-watering-container gardening is a whole lot easier. Beginning with the down-to-earth basics of soil, sun and water, fertilizer, seeds and propagation, THE BOUNTIFUL CONTAINER is an extraordinarily complete, plant-by-plant guide.

Written by two seasoned container gardeners and writers, THE BOUNTIFUL CONTAINER covers Vegetables-not just tomatoes (17 varieties) and peppers (19 varieties), butharicots verts, fava beans, Thumbelina carrots, Chioggia beets, and sugarsnap peas. Herbs, from basil to thyme, and including bay leaves, fennel, and saffron crocus. Edible Flowers, such as begonias, calendula, pansies, violets, and roses. And perhaps most surprising, Fruits, including apples, peaches, Meyer lemons, blueberries, currants, and figs-yes, even in the colder parts of the country. (Another benefit of container gardening: You can bring the less hardy perennials in over the winter.) There are theme gardens (an Italian cook's garden, a Four Seasons garden), lists of sources, and dozens of sidebars on everything from how to be a human honeybee to seeds that are All America Selections.

Book Description
The second edition of this very successful volume examines the current state of planning theory and the new directions it has taken in recent years. The editors have selected a set of classic and contemporary writings to address a central question: What role can planning theory play in making the good city and region within the constraints of a capitalist political economy and a democratic political system? The volume draws on a wide range of authors who address planning history, arguments for and against planning, competing planning styles, planning ethics, the public interest, and considerations of race and gender. Theoretical perspectives include political economy, postmodernism, communicative rationality, and feminism. Readings new to this edition examine themes emerging in planning theory, including a critique of the modernist roots of centralized planning, a reemphasis on space in planning, and a discussion of the difficulty of sustainable development. Review of Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe (and Parents Sane) (Paperback)

I hate reading anything that makes me feel anxious and initially this book sat on the shelf for weeks before I actually picked it up.I was so glad I did because there is such valuable information in here and I actually feel better about my child's safety than I did before.

Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe and Parents Sane is about how to teach your child to trust her instincts when it comes to safety.Since 90% of child abuse and abductions occur by people well-known to your child, teaching her to talk to strangers just doesn't work.Instead, the author gives you detailed and logical steps to take, starting as early as toddlerhood, so you'll know how to help your child learn to follow her instincive feelings about whether someone is safe or not.

Crucial information about how to be prepared for (God forbid but we should all be prepared just in case) the event that your child may be seperated from you in public.Examples include making a daily detailed mental note of the clothing your child is wearing, keeping large photocopies of your child's picture and name in your purse/wallet so you can hand them out to security personel within seconds of your child's disappearance and an action plan for immediate implementation.

There is SO much in this book - every bit of it worth reading so you can protect your child - and I can't recommend it strongly enough.Read it NOW and be prepared.

Review of Daily Life in the United States, 1920-1940: How Americans Lived Through the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression (Paperback)

The Great Depression is an event that tends to dominate the history of America from 1920-1940, and while it certainly had an impact, this impact was not uniformly felt throughout the country. Other factors helped shape the modern world we live in today, and many of them had their genesis in the period 1920-1940. Music, movies, diet, fashion, where people lived, what they did on dates, and even family planning -- this book covers it all and does so in a way that is easy to read and entertaining. If you think the Depression and Prohibition are all there was to life during this time, then I recommend you pick up this book for a more well-rounded view.

Review of Google AdWords For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) (Paperback)

Greetings,

Like the previous reviewer, I also do not yet own this book. However, I own the first edition, AND, have been personally trained by the author, Dr. Howie Jacobson, specifically in Google Adwords. Howie has himself been taught from some of the best names in the internet marketing arena and has been at this game for over 5 years.Howie's knowledge of Google Adwords is comprehensive, but equally as important, he knows how to communicate these best practices and concepts to beginners.

The cost of the book is a "pittance" compared to what is at stake for your small business. On a money-making note, when Adwords is used properly, the advantages gained will not only increase your web traffic and sales, but it will also help you dominate your competitors whom are completely ignorant to the intricacies of the Adwords System. All of which is known, understood, and clearly communicated by the author.

(SIDEBAR: After you invest in this new edition, I would highly recommend HIRING Howie (for consulting) because he'll answer any and all of your detailed questions to give you a complete "road map" of how to proceed effectively and in a timely manner. Consider his consulting fee a great investment on how not to lose your shirt when merging into this volatile game of Google advertising. Many "know it alls" have lost tens of thousands of dollars by not flipping one or two important "Levers" in the Google Adwords System. And, Google's default levers need to be properly "tweaked" or you're in for a world of hurt! You don't want to start off behind the 8-ball.

As a Google Certified Professional myself, I can easily say that Howie knows everything you need to know to put your best foot forward and position yourself to begin profiting from his valuable information.

Best of Luck.

Review of The Black Book of Hollywood Beauty Secrets (Paperback)

Alright, I have never written a review before but I just had to after receiving this book. I read it cover to cover in one day and it was redundant. They mentioned about five different "secrets" throughout thebook more than once. Let me save you the fourteen bucks and give you the skinny on the "secrets"
1) Egg White Mask :Tightens pores
2) Baking soda :Gentle microdermabrasion
3) Strawberry Jello :Lip and nipple stain...I kid you not!
4) Wine in the Bath :Good for skin
5) Ice Cube in Mouth :Press it to the roof to reduce puffiness in face.

These "secrets" were mentioned numerous times. The "authors" talked to stars and make-up people and they either said they used Creme De La Mer or were trying to push their own products. It seemed like onebig ad. All in all, I'm really disappointed...95% filler...5% meat!

Review of Infectious Disease Epidemiology: Theory And Practice (Hardcover)

This text is an excellent textbook for both infectious disease professionals and for students of infectious disease epidemiology. Nelson and colleagues cover a range of essential topics from a survey of important historical epidemics to study designs for infectious disease investigations. The first part of the text covers ID epidemiology background and methodology, whereas the second focuses on specific diseases as examples of different transmission modalities. TB, HIV and Influenza are among the pathogens discussed in great detail. Chapters are written by experts in their respective fields, making this textbook not only authoritative, but also up-to-date in scope and content. Many of the authors are affiliated with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health or the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine."Infectious Disease Epidemiology" is extremely readable, and serves as an excellent reference tool. I highly recommend it.

Product Description
This thorough revision contains new chapters on principles of immunology, measles and polio, meningococcal infections, including pneumococcal, and influenza infections. The chapter on emerging infections has been divided into one of mosquito borne infections and includes West Nile Virus, Rift V and Dengue as well as other arthropod borne infections. Review of The Pregnancy Book: Month-by-Month, Everything You Need to Know From America's Baby Experts (Paperback)

This pregnancy book is *much* better than the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book that is so often recommended to every pregnant woman out there. It is also much better than the other 'standard' pregnancy books you'll find.

This book is a complete and joyful guide to what happens during pregnancy - mentally, emotionally, and physically - to mom and baby.It has a great index; so if a specific symptom doesn't crop up in the exact month they cover it, you can easily look it up in the back and read about it.I found this guide very informative and supportive of everything I'm going through with my second pregnancy.[I wish I'd had this book for my first pregnancy, instead of that wretched "what to expect" book].

My one criticism of this book:the Sears' gloss over the pain that most women experience during labor.I didn't find the segment on labor very helpful or realistic. As a Childbirth Educator myself, I don't feel that anyone is doing pregnant women a favor by convicing them that labor doesn't hurt - that it is just 'pressure' or 'discomfort'.The reality is that for most women, labor IS painful - often extremely so.Women who seek an unmedicated birth need to prepare themselves to cope with and overcome this pain. And regardless of whether a woman expects to use medication or not, nobody is doing her any favors by misleading her about labor pain - she's not going to thank them when it hits her full on.

For preparing for labor and delivery, I *highly* recommend "Birthing From Within" by Pam England. It is much more realistic in preparing you for the "Real Thing" - and it is geared to help every woman work through her own issues and concerns about birthing. It is by far the most excellent book out there on labor and delivery.

Other than that small complaint - I think this is a *wonderful* guide to pregnancy - very supportive and comforting while being very honest.

Review of John Rosemond's New Parent Power! (Hardcover)

I'm intrigued by other reviews here that gripe about the lack of new material in John Rosemond's latest update on "Parent Power!"Remember, folks, the key word here is "update."It makes no claims to be an entirely new book. The other thing to bear in mind is that good, sound, commonsensical advice on parenting is essentially the same today as it was a hundred--or a thousand--years ago.It all boils down to one simple concept: you are in charge; the child is not.

Some people find Rosemond harsh. Those tend to be parents who are willing to fill their time by wheedling, cajoling and bargaining with their children.Others find Rosemond to make perfect sense. Those tend to be parents who understand (and apply!) the fundamental concept that the parents have more experience and more expertise than the children do, and that it is a parental responsibility to take charge and tell the children what the rules are, how the family works, and what the consequences are for disobedience.

Rosemond knows whereof he speaks. Not only is he a parent himself (two grown children--he's now a grandfather), but he has a doctorate in his chosen field. The thing he writes in "Parent Power!" that struck me like a bolt of lightning was that parents who let their kids take the lead and rule the roost are doing the children a disservice.Kids need and crave structure and order. They like knowing what the boundaries are (even if at first it appears that they don't!).When parents set boundaries and then don't keep within them--or lay down rules and then capitulate at the first request from the child--it actually disturbs the child, because it comes across as though the PARENT doesn't really know what the rules are.And to the kid, that translates to the frightening thought, "Well, gosh, if Mom and Dad don't know what the rules are, who DOES know?"

There's so much good stuff here.I urge every parent--frustrated or not--to be open-minded and read this terrific book. It's a treasure trove of useful, usable, sound information.

Product Description
John Rosemond is the dean of traditional, non-psychological parenting. Now, the author of nine best-selling books on raising children has combined his two most successful volumes into a single revised and updated edition for new parents - and those who need new ideas.John Rosemond's New Parent Power!, presents the renowned family psychologist's complete philosophy and methodology from the original Parent Power! supported by the details of his Six-Point Plan For Raising Happy, Healthy Children. As always, Rosemond delivers with a highly readable and refreshing tone, urging parents to listen to their hearts and their gut.

Review of The Mission of Motherhood: Touching Your Child's Heart for Eternity (Paperback)

I feel this book is a must read for any mom!I've read several parenting books, many of which focused on the area of discipline. This book was an awesome balance, because it focuses more on demonstrating love to your children, giving practical ways in order to do this. For example, in one chapter she talks about getting up early every so often and running to the store to pick up her family's favorite fancy danishes for breakfast, or taking the time to give your child a backrub or foot massage. They sound like obvious ideas, but I have to admit I've never done them. The days get busy, and I don't think about doing something like that.
She also gave me ideas to make my home more inviting and cozy for my children. Examples include using candles, nice music, etc. These are all things that I have and think about when company comes over, but don't necessarily think about doing for my own family.
Overall, this book just reminded me of the importance of showing your children how much you just love being with them, and ways to keep them close to you and your husband.

Review of Medical-Surgical Nursing Made Incredibly Easy! (Incredibly Easy! Series) (Paperback)

For those who have never utilized the Incrediby Easy series, these books are great for review or to help make concepts less confusing, but are still *no replacement* for your textbook! :)

I purchased this a a quick reference - something to use to review key points for my Med-Surg classes.I found that the information, though all there, was difficult to muddle through. Cartoons of pills and organs smiling and giving helpful hints did nothing for me!My edition did not come with a CD either, so If you really do want this book please check this before you purchase.

If you are looking for a good Med-Surg book to help with reviews, I would highly recommend "Straight A's in Medical Surgical Nursing", ISBN 1582552843 by the same publisher. The information is almost exactly the same, and is easier to read because of a user-friendly layout. (Also comes with a CD, and costs about $10.00 less!)

Review of Lasagna Gardening: A New Layering System for Bountiful Gardens: No Digging, No Tilling, No Weeding, No Kidding! (Paperback)

I believe that when it comes to books presenting new ways of doing anything, the only testimony that counts is that which comes from firsthand experience.Well folks, I'm here to tell you after a year of gardening the lasagna way that my firsthand experience shows this book is one of the wisest investments any gardener can make.Let me tell you about my 2003 garden.

First, a short outline of lasagna gardening technique:soak b&w newspapers in water, then overlap sections in a single layer directly on top of premarked sod area. This smothers the weeds/grass underneath. Then put a 4 inch layer of moistened peat moss over that, followed by a moist layer of organic shredded green material, followed by another layer of peat moss, followed by a layer of moist compost or yard waste, repeat the peat moss/organic matter pattern until your bed is built up to at least 18 inches high.Finish with compost on top, then either let it break down for a few months for certain crops or plant seeds and transplants directly into the matrix by pushing aside layers and inserting. As the layers break down, the earthworms will be eating the sod and breaking up the newspapers, mixing the layers together for you.The final result is an organic, self-tilled soil that's rich and free of disease and weed seeds. It's so simple.

Note:the author did neglect to mention the importance of wetting down each layer as you build the beds.I only figured this out because I had made compost before and I knew you needed moist materials for it to work.

In late fall of 2002 I built a 5 foot by 25 foot border bed for perennial flowers the lasagna way after reading Patricia Lanza's book.It sounded almost too good to be true - no digging, no tilling, no weeding? What was the catch, I asked myself. When I was done I planted perennials taken from four inch pots, watered them in, and left them for the winter rains to take care of (we can do that in So. Cal, hee hee). They settled in nicely and grew steadily, but it was cool weather so the roots were doing most of the growth at that time.A few months later as top growth appeared I was encouraged to build more lasagna beds in my vegetable garden - two 5 by 5 raised beds to go with my other two traditionally tilled raised beds (those were a lot of work, double digging, sifting rocks, mixing compost, etc.I wish now that I had known about the lasagna method a few years ago!).After about two hour's work I was done layering my new vegetable beds and watered them down to compost a little. In late May, I transplanted sweet peppers and basil starts to one lasagna bed and planted cantaloupes and flowers in the other.

Those two lasagna beds outperformed the traditional beds in every way. That summer I harvested more sweet peppers than ever before. It was my first try growing cantaloupes, so I have no previous crops to compare, but they did well and I harvested quite a few delicious, sun-sweetened cantaloupes from that bed.Meanwhile the flowers seemed to love the soil in my perennial bed, and they grew to huge proportions, filling in the space nicely by season's end.As promised, there was little watering and even less weeding. As a bonus, I never fertilized because the soil was already so rich in composting organic matter.Best of all, no soil-borne diseases! This was an organic gardener's paradise.

Author Patricia Lanza uses plenty of real-life examples from her own gardens to illustrate the effectiveness of this technique. She explains in detail how lasagna gardening differs from traditional tilling and double digging, what the benefits are and which crops need to wait while the layers compost down and which can be put in right away. There is an alphabetical listing of ways to plant annuals and seeds in lasagna beds, a plethora of tips on maximizing your space and innovating ways to grow vertically if need be.There are also garden plans for flower borders and perennial beds grouped according to watering and sunshine needs.

Please don't be afraid to break with "tradition" - you could save not only your garden tool budget, but your back as well. And if the promise of all those fruits, veggies and flowers with less work and more pleasure isn't enough for you, then you must really love that rototiller!
-Andrea, aka Merribelle

Review of The Big Blowdown (Paperback)

Fans of George Pelecanos will not be disappointed in this excellent novel. Set in D.C. during the years just before and after WWII, his familiar cast of characters inhabit a world of hope and violence that somehow seemsappropriate to the American Dream. The plot is engaging and believable, theaction is fast paced, and the character portrayals are as satisfying as areader could want. This is a great story of friendship, betrayal and flawedredemption. Much more than just a 'crime novel' (and this is true of hisother books as well) The Big Blowdown evokes a time when everthing seemedpossible, from great success to 'the Big Blowdown' (atomic annihilation)and tells the story a few immigrant kids whose future turns out to be quitedifferent from any they would have imagined.

Reading a Pelecanos bookalways leaves me feeling as though I had touched a piece of real life. Thisbook has the added appeal of touching a real piece of time gone by as well.Very satisfying. I highly recommend it.

Review of American Slavery: 1619-1877 (Paperback)

Kolchin offers his book as a concise, readable synthesis of the movements in the historiography of slavery in the United States.Influenced by the movement toward social and cultural history, he devotes considerable attention to slave life in the antebellum south and the effects of the particular situation of slavery in the United States in shaping slave culture.Kolchin also situates slavery in the U.S. in the context of the world wide institution with comparisons to the Caribbean, Brazil, and to the Russian serfs which both highlights the unique situation of American Slaves and emphasizes that the institution of slavery did not exist in a vacuum.

The book progresses chronologically from the 1619 arrival of slaves in Jamestown to a brief discussion of the end of slavery and the problems of reconstruction, with thematic treatments of slave life, white control and paternalism in antebellum slavery as well as white society, economy, and ideology in the American south.

In producing such a smooth synthesis, Kolchin admittedly sacrifices a certain amount of detail and nuance for the sake of flow and clarity.Disconcerting, at times is his lack of documentation, another victim of simplicity in Kolchin's approach. While accomplishing his goal of remaining clear and readable, the reader sometimes wishes for some assistance in discerning the origin or fuller development of a particular position or point. To his credit, Kolchin works references to the historiography into his text well, and he provides an exceedingly thorough bibliographical essay at the end, which is probably the strongest segment of the work.Still, the lack of documentation sometimes proves frustrating and thus counters the goal of smooth flow in the text.

In the final analysis, however, Kolchin produces an excellent, readable volume that accomplishes his goal of a balanced narrative that shows how slavery evolved over time in the United States. So too has it accomplished its purpose in enlightening beginners and enkindling much scholarly discussion.

Review of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life (Paperback)

This book is a Godsend to anyone who wants to eat good food that is healthy and tastes good.I had the priviledge of having Dave Grotto as a nutritionist during chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer. He came to my home and went through all my cabinets to show me all the items that were 'bad' or 'good', then tagged them with stickers, so I wouldnt forget. Then he took me grocery shopping to show me all the great foods that are great tasting and also very healthy. So many foods we dont realize are right in front of us that we dont try!!He taught me how to read labels, not just by fat and carbs, but the ingredient contents, and explained how to make them.It was fun and educational.I am happy to say that one year after my last treatment, my last check up was wonderful, no signs of cancer!!!!Coinsedence or fact, that foods play a big part in your health?Probably both, but I am not giving up on all the advice that Dave gave me.Im feeling wonderful.Everything he told me in person, is also in his book.I take it shopping me all the time, and refer to it quite often.Buy the book!!!You WILL NOT regret it!!

Review of LITIGATION PARALEGAL 4E (The West Legal Studies Series) (Hardcover)

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This was an informative and well written book which was also easy to read and follow.I can't stand boring complicated college books so this one was a welcome change. It really helped to break down the litigation process and defined many terms and uncomplicated some things that would have been quite difficult otherwise.

I'd definitely recommend it to anyone just wanting to know more about litigation, especially those who don't want to be bogged down with technical legal jargon which is hard for most people to understand.

Review of Fancy Nancy: Poison Ivy Expert (I Can Read Book 1) (Paperback)

Am I the only one who is a little disappointed with the "I Can Read" book versions of Fancy Nancy? The story here is still cute, and it's the most educational version of Nancy for certain, but it's kind of missing a lot of the "fanciness" of the hardcover books that made them really fun. There is more to being Fancy Nancy than saying "X is a fancy way of saying Y", which is all that this book really offers. There is no fancy versus un-fancy conflict in her poison ivy escapade. With this Fancy Nancy I Can Read book, I think that the illustrator who is covering the text of the story is getting up to par with Robin Preiss Glasser, though!

Product Description

When Nancy picks flowers for Ms. Glass's surprise party, she is overjoyed-until she discovers an unpleasant surprise of her own! How could Nancy, practically a poison ivy expert, come down with something so unfancy?

In this hilarious new addition to the Fancy Nancy I Can Read series, Nancy realizes that even experts can always learn something new. With her boundless spirit and dynamic flair, Nancy is sure to leave young readers itching for more!

Review of The Birth Book: Everything You Need to Know to Have a Safe and Satisfying Birth (Sears Parenting Library) (Paperback)

I'm a mother of two, a critical RN and certainly not a Luddite. If I had to choose one book to have prior to the birth of my first child, this one would be it. (I'm here to buy one for a family member as a gift, I already own this book!)

I could write my own book with my thoughts and feelings about childbirth, childbirth prepartion, and postpartum recovery. I'll just say this,however...

Childbirth hurts. Take all of the classes, read the books, get drugs, it still hurts. Go to a hospital and expect them to hold your hand during labour and you'll be disappointed, they're too busy to do that. Have someone there with you to support you through the whole thing. Preferably at least one person that has done this before. Could be a doula, could be your best friend or mother... Interventions DO lead to more interventions. Less is better for the birth, the mother, the baby and your recovery (I've done both types). If you can swing less, do that.

Reading books like these, taking classes to practice positioning techniques and exercising your body actually does HELP. Having some ideas on things to try when the going gets rough HELPS. Not everything will work for everyone, but many things will work or at least help you cope.Everyone should be prepared for natural childbirth, regardless of whether or not they are planning to have drugs, even major ones. You can't get an epidural until you are at least four cm or it can stop your labour. I wasn't four cm with my first child until I was 24 hours into labour. And both times I tried an epidural, and it didn't take the first time at all, only took partially the second time. The only type of medication that will give you total relief from childbirth discomfort is general anesthesia. Having a list of things that I could do to cope made all of the difference in the world to me. The first birth I was much more passive. The second birth I was much more proactive and had a much better time of it. My recovery was night and day too.

I respect Sears and his wife as both parents and healthcare professionals. Their series of books are not perfect, but I would say, after reading reams of drivel or hyperbole on the subject at hand, they actually do the overall best job for a basic book. Most folks read one, max two books pre-birth, so if you have to choose only one, this would be it.And their book "The Baby Book" is also the best one out there regarding babies.

Btw, regarding the comment about the AFP test. It is famous for false positives, which can cause unneeded stress to parents. I don't have an opinion about having the test, either way beyond that. As to Down's Syndrome, some parents want to know in order to terminate the pregnancy. Looks like termination is not on their list of things to consider, so why should they have the test? (I had an amnio, much more accurate.) The way the review was written, it sounded like they had done something irresponsible. Some parents want to know, others don't. Knowing or not knowing neither causes Down's Syndrome (a chromosomal abnormality apparent at conception), nor will change the outcome of the pregnancy.

I wouldn't just read this book. I'm the type of person that reads everything that I can get my hands on, both on a professional level and from the mainstream press. But this is certainly a book for my short list. Read it.

Review of A User's Guide to the Brain: Perception, Attention, and the Four Theaters of the Brain (Paperback)

"Mental problems, from hot temper to laziness, from chronic worry to excessive drinking, all have roots in the biology of the brain." (p. 357)

This is a report on a revolution taking place in neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology and kindred disciplines. The old paradigms are crumbling under the onslaught of a new understanding of how the brain really works.Harvard Medical School psychiatrist John J. Ratey's "guide" (it's more than that) is an admirable exercise in bringing us up to date on what is happening in brain science--what we suspect, what we know, and how this knowledge is affecting clinical practice.

In a sense Ratey's book is a report on a new paradigm. It is biology-based and relies first and foremost on the physiology of the brain and body as they have developed over time.Gone are the artificial constructs of Freudian psychology and the very limited black-box psychology of behaviorism. The new psychology is based on opening that black box and looking inside.Of course what we find there is enormously complex, and we are, to use Ratey's expression (p. 124), "still on the first step of a very long staircase."Yet, because of the growing power of neuroscience to study and access the living brain in ways that were impossible just a few years ago, we are entering an exciting time, full of hope and wonder.

As Dr. Ratey explains in "Acknowledgments," this book began as a cooperative research effort by many people toward writing a "primer on the brain for mental health professionals."Then it was suggested by Pantheon editor Linda Healey that a smaller version "that would try to instruct the public at large" be written.A professional science writer, Mark Fischetti, was hired and schooled. The result is a book written in an engaging and very readable manner. However, its organization--neat and reasonable as it is--actually detracts from the book's effectiveness because the most interesting and helpful chapters are near the end. I realize that Ratey and his editors and writers came to the conclusion that the material in the last three chapters, "The Social Brain," "The Four Theaters," and "Care and Feeding" could be better appreciated after having read the more fundamental material in the first seven chapters.Nonetheless I believe that a lot of people who would benefit from this very fine book will not get to those chapters.Too bad.Ratey's metaphor of the four theaters is a powerful tool for incorporating and understanding the new paradigm, while the final chapter gives us some very excellent advice on how to live fully while keeping the brain and our systems healthy.

Consequently I would propose that when Dr. Ratey updates this book (and I hope he will; there is so much happening in neuroscience that some of the information here will be dated in just a few years) that he structure the book so that it begins with Chapter 9, "The Four Theaters," followed by Chapter 8, "The Social Brain," and then the first seven chapters, concluding with the advice in Chapter 10, "Care and Feeding."For the reader, I recommend reading Chapter 9 first so that you can immediately share in the excitement that is at the heart of the book.

The "theaters," by the way, should be understood as "theaters of operations" and not theaters where movies might be shown.(Originally Ratey had used "kingdoms of the brain" as his metaphor.)The theaters are (1) perception; (2) attention, consciousness and cognition; (3) brain function (memory, emotion, movement, etc.); and (4) behavior and identity. He sees a flow of consequence (like a river) from perception to attention to function to behavior. He argues persuasively that the brain is a holistically operating entity that is constantly being changed by its interaction with the environment, a dynamic organism that is forever learning, making new perceptions and adjustments.Things can go wrong in any one of the theaters and what happens in any theater affects the other theaters down river (and even up river). What I found particularly interesting is the new approach to diagnostics and therapy this understanding affords.A good example is on pages 347-349 where Ratey tells the story of Theresa who was slow to learn, unsocial and awkward in sports.Instead of some disorder out of DSM-IV being plastered on her forehead, Ratey found that she had a perception problem, and he demonstrated how her social and functional problems stemmed from that "first theater" problem.Ratey emphasizes freeing the patient from self-doubt and personal blame for whatever the problem may be, and always looks for a biological cause first. Some bits of wisdom from the best chapter in the book, from pages 353-355:

"Modern medical practice tends to regard patients' self-evaluations as too tainted by subjectivity, but this is a grave error."

"It is quite beyond the average patient's ability, within the framework of...insight-oriented therapies, to pinpoint the true source of unhappiness and frustration."

"Prozac is hardly a remedy for the self-blame, lost opportunities, and intellectual insecurity of a lifetime compromised by unrecognized perceptual and cognitive deficits."

"We have to begin to think of the brain as a self-organizing ecosystem, one of such staggering complexity and delicate balance that almost any aspect of a patient's life may be relevant to a diagnosis or essential to treatment."

"[T]he clinician's duty...includes devoting more time to looking for what is good in patients' lives, for the strengths and talents that are not yet being fully realized, and for the secret pleasures and sources of happiness that they have never allowed themselves."

"We in psychiatry continually risk mistaking our labels for the disorders themselves."

"The brain's processes can be utterly transformed by self-discovery and the right pursuits in life."
