Review of Caring for Patients from Different Cultures (Paperback)

As Director of Nursing for a small, rural county health department, I was looking for cultural information on dealing with Hispanic populations. What this book covers is all of that and more.It was a real eye opener! Ms.Galanti gives case synopses on caring for patients from many diversecultures. She covers cultural differences with nutrition, religion, familysupport, response to pain, and a wealth of other topics.I purchased thisbook for our staff library, and a copy for myself and my nurse-mother.Anyone who deals with people from other cultures(not just health careproviders) needs to read this book!

Product Description

What happens when a Cherokee patient summons a medicine man to the hospital, or when an Anglo nurse refuses to take orders from a Japanese doctor? Why do Asian patients rarely ask for pain medication, while Mediterranean patients seem to seek relief for even the slightest discomfort?

If the goal of the American medical system is to provide optimal care for all patients, healthcare providers must understand cultural differences that create conflicts and misunderstandings and can result in inferior medical care. Geri-Ann Galanti's updated classic, Caring for Patients from Different Cultures, is even more comprehensive than the first three editions, containing new appendices for quick reference, an expanded and updated bibliography with Internet resources, and a detailed index.

Caring for Patients from Different Cultures contains more than 200 case studies illustrating crosscultural misunderstanding and culturally competent health care. The chapters cover a wide range of topics, including birth, end of life, traditional medicine, mental health, pain, religion, and multicultural staff issues. The case studies illustrate important concepts from the fields of cultural diversity and medical anthropology. This volume is an important resource for nurses and physicians in achieving cultural competency.

Review of Asthma for Dummies (Paperback)

I was skeptical of the name. However, I leafed through it (and many other asthma books) in a brick and mortar store before I bought this book. And I am so grateful! It's easy to read, but doesn't shy away from the technical and biological concepts you should know.It has nice diagrams for those of us who need the visuals to understand somewhat complicated biology.

I feel so much more informed about my disease after having read this book.I feel like I can talk with my doctors and know what questions to ask them, and understand their responses!I can honestly say that after reading this book, I was able to advocate for my own health enough that I feel I can breathe properly and happily now.

There are medications and small lifestyle changes out there that can improve an asthmatic's quality of life immensely. But it is important first to understand the disease itself and then what each medication or technique may do to help. This book is a good start, and I highly recommend taking the step to improve your well-being.

Review of Healthy Places, Healthy People: A Handbook for Culturally Competent Community Nursing Practice (Paperback)

The purchase of this book is related to a course I am currently enrolled in.

Product Description
This revolutionary book is the first of its kind designed to provide nurses the tactics and tools to help them approach public health nursing through the tapestry of culture and community instead of the individual. By looking through the clarifying lenses of anthropology, economics, political science, sociology, and epidemiology, and other soft and hard sciences, the authors show a clear and powerful connection to health of the larger community and the health of individuals. Once this connection is made, the health care team--of which the public health nurse is uniquely positioned to lead--can focus energies and funding on affecting change and affecting health.Intentionally, Healthy Places, Healthy People de-emphasizes the care of individuals and families, not because it is not important, but rather to introduce students to a kind of nursing practice--focused on health rather than disease, on communities rather than individuals, and on strengths as well as failings. Two chapters are devoted exclusively to community and cultural assessment, with a quick and easy-to-use assessment approach laid out in sidebar boxes throughout these chapters. It is ideal for undergraduate and graduate nursing students and practicing nurses who are not familiar with population-based culturally sensitive care. The author team of Melanie Dreher, Dolores Shapiro and Micheline Asselin together have a powerful command of a wide range of issues in community health nursing, including a strong grounding in practice issues, public health policy, anthropology, and scholarship.A Teaching Guide is available to instructors who adopt the book for use in their courses as a free downloadable PDF file. Contact the publisher at 1.888.654.4968 to arrange for your teaching guide.

Review of The Hypertension Report: Say Goodbye to High Blood Pressure (Paperback)

I had sudden onset hypertension about 2 months ago. I didn't want to go on any bp meds in fear of the horrible side effects. I followed every bit of protocol to the letter including vitamins, supplements, exercise and diet, and lost 16lbs in 2.5 weeks (which I had been trying to lose for years), and yet my bp kept climbing and climbing to 150/170 and 185 over 90-117 at its highest. I'm a tiny person, of 61 inches and 103lbs and couldn't lose anymore weight without looking anorexic, and yet I was an anomaly. They kept pushing the meds, and I kept pushing for more testing asking the cardiologist for tests that he should have ordered in the first place.Lucky for me I was my own advocate and had done a lot of reading. He finally ordered a renal sonogram, and it revealed a blocked artery to my kidney and yet, my renin wasn't elevated (which is a classic sign of renal artery stenosis).RAS is a secondary hypertension and only affects about 1-5% of all hypertensive cases. Renal hypertension is very difficult to manage with conventional meds and often requires 2-3 different meds. They had a hard time convincing me to even try one.I took the one they told me they prescribe to elderly people and pregnant women. Ha! Within 1 hour of taking it, I developed a migraine so bad, I had to lay down, and by the second hour, my bp had reached 220/125 the highest it has ever been.I went to the ER in fear of a stroke.the only remedy for RAS is either take the meds or do angioplasty - neither of which makes me happy since I'm allergic to dyes. They suggested an MRA with gadolinium to confirm the diagnosis, and I have a fear of the gadolinium since there are no guarantees of not having an anaphylactic reaction (although they claim they are rare - and i am hypersensitive to drugs - so it's risky). If you have any kind of kidney disease you should not have the gadolinium either since it is contraindicated and can cause an incurable kidney nephrosis. So if you do all the right things, and your bp doesn't resolve by these methods, ask your dr for a renal sonogram.

Product Description
An estimated 50 million Americans have high blood pressure, often called the "silent killer'' because it may not cause symptoms until the patient has suffered serious damage to the arterial system. It raises the risk of heart attacks, strokes, congestive heart failure, kidney damage, dementia and even blindness. That's a laundry list of horrors you want to avoid and so drug treatment should be an easy sell to the public. There is a massive campaign going on to educate the public to the NEW PARADIGM: "Early detection means early treatment and cure" -- just like with the American Cancer Society and the war on breast cancer. And like the war on breast cancer, it may turn out to just as disappointing. Early drug treatment may not work at all to reduce the mortality rate. It needs to be tried, however, IF they can find drugs that won't do more harm than good. Hypertension treatment is the same regardless of whether the problem is systolic or diastolic or both. But what if they have different mechanisms? Then you will need two drugs, which greatly increases your potential for serious side effects. Diet, exercise, potassium supplements chelation therapy and practically anything but drugs is the way to go in my opinion. We discuss alternatives in this report.

Review of Caring for the Vulnerable: Perspectives in Nursing Theory, Practice, and Research (Paperback)

A book like this should have come out long ago! When I was taking my "Vulnerable Populations" course in my BSN program we did not even have a textbook. Now nursing students can benefit from the experiences and research in this book.

Product Description
Within an expanding field of study in both undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula, Caring for the Vulnerable explores vulnerability from the perspective of individuals, groups, communities and populations, and addresses the implication of that vulnerability for nurses, nursing, and nursing care.

Organized into six units, the text presents a basic structure for caring for the vulnerable, and forms a theoretical perspective on caring for doing so within a cultural context, with the ultimate goal of providing culturally competent care. Theoretical and research chapters advance to chapters offering learning experiences for nursing students and practitioners. As nurses are the crucial link between those who are vulnerable, and those with access to solutions, the last unit provides ideas for how nurses might advocate for the vulnerable on a policy level.

Written specifically for nurses, by nurses, Caring for the Vulnerable is a timely and necessary response to the culturally diverse vulnerable populations for whom nurses must provide appropriate and precise care.

Review of Ayurveda: The Divine Science of Life (Hardcover)

Ayurveda and its principles have been gradually becoming more
accessible to Westerners over the last thirty years. During this time,
a few books have appeared by Westerners on the topic offering an
overview of the field, a few have described materia medica in
Ayurvedic terms, and a few texts from India may be available. To date,
however, there has not been a single comprehensive textbook on the
topic written for the Westerner, by a Western clinical practitioner.
Todd Caldecott's book now fills that gap, and also corrects some
common misconceptions about Ayurveda.
Ayurveda was a dying medical system in India by the turn of the
twentieth century, preserved in a few family lineages in South Asia,
but largely supplanted by British colonial medicine and, in parts of
India, by Unani Tibb. After Indian independence in 1948, there was a
resurgence of interest in this traditional national system. The
resurgence unfortunately was not based on the extant thin lineages of
clinical practice, but on books, and filtered through the lens of a
sometimes-fundamentalist approach of twentieth-century Hinduism. Two
aspects of the resurrected Ayurveda as taught in North America are at
odds with the authentic original tradition. First, original Ayurveda was not a vegetarian system, contrary to common contemporary practice in North America. Second, the pulse diagnosis system in Ayurveda does not
differ essentially from the Chinese system. Caldecott, who was trained in a legitimate lineage in India, practices now in Canada, and supervised a teaching clinic there for some years at the Wild Rose College in Calgary, has corrected these distortions. This is not just a philosophical consideration. Fewer than 3% of the North American population adhere to a strict vegetarian diet, and insisting on this as the ideal diet, besides contradicting core original Ayurvedic literature, essentially rules out benefit to much of the other 97%. Caldecott's text shows how the broad principles of Ayurveda can be applied in the social and dietary realities of 21st century North America.
The book has everything you would expect in a textbook of humoral
medicine: theory, constitutional considerations, dietary and lifestyle
considerations, pharmacology and pharmacy, pathology and disease,
clinical methodology for assessment, therapeutic methods, a materia
medica of the fifty most important Ayurvedic herbs, and a formulary.

Product Description
This unique one-of-a-kind book is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of Ayurveda, and discusses the practical use of therapies such as diet, exercise, yoga, meditation, massage, and herbal remedies. The book also includes detailed information on Ayurvedic pharmacology and pharmacy, clinical methods and examinations, and general treatment protocols. Plus, a helpful section provides a comprehensive materia medica of 50 Indian herbs that include botanical descriptions, traditional Ayurvedic knowledge, constituent data and the latest medical research, as well as clinical indications, formulations, and dosages.

  • Helpful full-color insert containing photos of the 50 herbs covered, alongside a ruler for scale, allows the reader to quickly identify herbs correctly.
  • Includes useful appendices, including information on dietary and lifestyle regimens, Ayurvedic formulations, Ayurvedic weights and measures, glossaries on Ayurvedic terms, and medical substances.
  • Unique contributions include a discussion of pathology, clinical methods, diagnostic techniques, and treatment methods from an Ayurvedic perspective.

Review of The Truth About Garden Remedies: What Works, What Doesn't, and Why (Paperback)

Finally, the book I've been waiting for! I'm an avid gardner and a curious person. I am always looking for remedies for the various challenges I have in my garden. Whether it's insects, fertilizer problems, slugs and so on, I'm looking for solutions and not just myths with no foundation in reality. In 'The Truth About Garden Remedies', Dr Gillman covers a wide range of problems that can be encountered by me and my fellow gardners. The difference in this book, unlike most of the books I've read on the subject is that the answers are supported by real science and conveyed in a way that is completely readable. What is even more exciting, is that Dr. Gillman isn't a stuffy reseacher that is unwilling to consider alternative remedies, there are plenty of them in this book. I can't wait to mix up one of the garlic recipes to repel those pesky Aphids! Thank you Dr Gillmam.

Review of Homeopathic Medicine At Home (Paperback)

I have been studying homeopathy for 30 years & when I do not have time to fully repertorize an illness (which is almost NEVER with anything acute these days!) this book is my first resource. It seems to cover most acute illnesses & is especially good for treating colds, flu, stings, gas, teething problems, sore throats, etc....

I would like to see a better cross-referenced Index, but the numerous charts supplied somewhat make up for this short-coming - making it pretty easy to locate the problem/illness without too much difficulty. It also contains a nice little Materia Medica in the back -- so if you can't decide between several remedies this will help narrow the choice as it gives the specifics for the remedy as opposed to the main part of the book which gives the recommended remedies for the illiness.

I often back it up with "Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines" by Stephen Cummings & Dana Ullman - but if I had to choose only one book to purchase I would go with the book I am reviewing.

Another small short-coming of the book is it doesn't cover CELL SALTS as completely as needed (although, to be fair, no "quick-guide" homeopathic book does - with any depth anyway). which is why I would recommend the companion book: "Natural Healing with Cell Salts" by Dr. Skye Weintraub. Personally, I have found cell salts to work extremely well in conjunction with homeopathic remedies. Even though I practice the principals of classical homeopathy (ONE remedy at a time - changing the remedy until you find the one that works, & change remedies as soon as symptoms change &/or the current remedy no longer works) I still like to combine a homeopathic remedy with a cell salt. (A good example here would be a fever with a flushed face: homeopathic remedy might be Belladonna, and add the cell salt - Ferr Phos.)

Over-all I couldn't give the book 5 stars due to the inadequate Index and less-than-stellar coverage of CELL SALTS, but for my money, this is still a best-bet!

If you are new to homeopathy I can not encourage you enough to pursue this wonderful means of natural healing! And if you are a Christian, I urge you NOT to get hung up on the aspect of energetic healing until you learn more about the principals. I am a Christian who have seen ignorant fellow-Christians shrink at the idea of homeopathics as if they were some kind of voodoo. This is simply a fear-driven response that hopefully will be re-evaluated.

Anyone interested in pursuing the principals of healing through homeopathic medicine, more in-depth, would do well to purchase the book "The Science of Homeopathy" by George Vithoulkas and also get a Materia Medica by Boerricke and a "Repertory" by J. T. Kent. You could also call your local naturopath & ask if they offer classes. Anyone can learn homeopathy. I began when my children were born and they never had to take antibiotics more than once throughout their entire childhoods. They are now all adults who practice homeopathy with their own families, and this is the first homeopathic book I gave them as a gift when they moved into their new homes (along with a basic supply of remedies). Good luck, and God bless.

Product Description
This one-volume compendium of homeopathic information includes the history of homeopathy, an explanation of its principles, and advice on dosage. A full pharmacopoeia of natural remedies for common ailments and injuries, it also contains sections on homeopathy for children and pets.
