Ms.Galanti gives case synopses on caring for patients from many diversecultures.She covers cultural differences with nutrition, religion, familysupport, response to pain, and a wealth of other topics.I purchased thisbook for our staff library, and a copy for myself and my nurse-mother.Anyone who deals with people from other cultures(not just health careproviders) needs to read this book!

Review of Creative Long-Term Care Administration (Hardcover)

This is a wonderful book about Nursing Home Administration.It approaches the topic from a much more up to date perspective than the other text books out there, with references to newer management styles, a more holistic/wellness approach to the resident, resident-centered care, and pet therapy. It also covers the basics such as board governance and techniques to working with your board.This is a wonderful book to learn about how to administrate TODAY's and TOMORROW's culture changed nursing homes, not yesterdays.

A MUST READ FOR FUTURE AND CURRENT NH ADMINISTRATORS.

Review of Medical-Surgical Nursing Made Incredibly Easy! (Incredibly Easy! Series) (Paperback)

For those who have never utilized the Incrediby Easy series, these books are great for review or to help make concepts less confusing, but are still *no replacement* for your textbook! :)

I purchased this a a quick reference - something to use to review key points for my Med-Surg classes.I found that the information, though all there, was difficult to muddle through. Cartoons of pills and organs smiling and giving helpful hints did nothing for me!My edition did not come with a CD either, so If you really do want this book please check this before you purchase.

If you are looking for a good Med-Surg book to help with reviews, I would highly recommend "Straight A's in Medical Surgical Nursing", ISBN 1582552843 by the same publisher.The information is almost exactly the same, and is easier to read because of a user-friendly layout. (Also comes with a CD, and costs about $10.00 less!)

The book arrived quickly and in great condition. In all honestly its an okay review book for Pharmacology. The book also has a review for the NCLEX-RN Exam. I think the entire book should have just been a review for Pharmacology. I recommend buying a study guide for the NCLEX-RN Exam seperately.

When you pick up a book in this genre, it's very important to ensure that the info is factual and relatively unbiased. Many of the books on wellness out there are really out to sell some supplement, product or service.

This book only gives you the facts on Chinese medicince. Using very simple language and plenty of illustrations, the author presents the basic principles of TCM - Yin, Yang and the 5 Elements. It's a very different "science", so some people may not believe in it, but there is really nothing secretive or mystic about TCM. It really works.

Especially helpful is the author's glossary of common Chinese herbs and their actions, side effects. He also has a few herbal formulas and food recipes. An essential read for novices who want to learn the basics about TCM.

Review of The Hypertension Report: Say Goodbye to High Blood Pressure (Paperback)

I had sudden onset hypertension about 2 months ago. I didn't want to go on any bp meds in fear of the horrible side effects. I followed every bit of protocol to the letter including vitamins, supplements, exercise and diet, and lost 16lbs in 2.5 weeks (which I had been trying to lose for years), and yet my bp kept climbing and climbing to 150/170 and 185 over 90-117 at its highest. I'm a tiny person, of 61 inches and 103lbs and couldn't lose anymore weight without looking anorexic, and yet I was an anomaly.They kept pushing the meds, and I kept pushing for more testing asking the cardiologist for tests that he should have ordered in the first place.Lucky for me I was my own advocate and had done a lot of reading.He finally ordered a renal sonogram, and it revealed a blocked artery to my kidney and yet, my renin wasn't elevated (which is a classic sign of renal artery stenosis).RAS is a secondary hypertension and only affects about 1-5% of all hypertensive cases. Renal hypertension is very difficult to manage with conventional meds and often requires 2-3 different meds. They had a hard time convincing me to even try one.I took the one they told me they prescribe to elderly people and pregnant women. Ha! Within 1 hour of taking it, I developed a migraine so bad, I had to lay down, and by the second hour, my bp had reached 220/125 the highest it has ever been.I went to the ER in fear of a stroke.the only remedy for RAS is either take the meds or do angioplasty - neither of which makes me happy since I'm allergic to dyes.They suggested an MRA with gadolinium to confirm the diagnosis, and I have a fear of the gadolinium since there are no guarantees of not having an anaphylactic reaction (although they claim they are rare - and i am hypersensitive to drugs - so it's risky). If you have any kind of kidney disease you should not have the gadolinium either since it is contraindicated and can cause an incurable kidney nephrosis.So if you do all the right things, and your bp doesn't resolve by these methods, ask your dr for a renal sonogram.

And like the war on breast cancer, it may turn out to just as disappointing. Early drug treatment may not work at all to reduce the mortality rate. It needs to be tried, however, IF they can find drugs that won't do more harm than good. Hypertension treatment is the same regardless of whether the problem is systolic or diastolic or both. But what if they have different mechanisms? Then you will need two drugs, which greatly increases your potential for serious side effects. Diet, exercise, potassium supplements chelation therapy and practically anything but drugs is the way to go in my opinion. We discuss alternatives in this report.

Review of American Medical Association Family Medical Guide, 4th Edition (Hardcover)

It is no surprise that the latest edition of this excellentconsumer reference is better than ever. For those who are newcomers to the power of this authoritative tome, its centerpiece is a series of symptom charts enabling users to conduct the equivalent of a differential self-diagnosis. Charts are available for the most common symptomologies--e.g. coughing, chest pain, abdominal pain, back pain. Through an interrogatory consisting of sequential questions which might be asked by a health professional presented with the symptoms in question, the charts guide the reader to action steps--ranging from reassurance and self-help options to advise to seek medical attention (urgently or in due course as the case may be).

By saving unnecessary visits to the doctor's office or emergency room (thus helping to control medical costs) or spurring the overly complacent to imperative action, the AMA does a great service to the public and the profession by publishing this reference at an extremely affordable price.

The bulk of the book consists of articles regarding various diseases and conditions encompassing symptomology, description diagnostic techniques (tests and such) likely to be employed, treatment options, and the range of expected prognoses--in a nutshell, what do I have, how will they find out, what will they do to treat me, and what's the outlook in terms of cure and survival.

A wealth of reliable, understandable information is readily accessible to the lay person and accompanied by helpful illustrations.

I have relied on this book for years to help me deal intelligently with health matters involving my friends, my family, and myself. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to empower themselves to be a prudent steward of health and well being.

The update is most welcome, as the dynamic pace of medicine has yielded therapeutic innovations (in particular new pharmaceuticals) that provide much happier endings to many of the disease entries.

I found this book very well written and very well balanced. It is invaluable for the newcomer to herbs, and would be a valuable addition to the bookshelf of a more experienced user too. It's one of those books whichsits in my kitchen and gets referred to almost every day.

A book like this should have come out long ago! When I was taking my "Vulnerable Populations" course in my BSN program we did not even have a textbook. Now nursing students can benefit from the experiences and research in this book.

Review of Ayurveda: The Divine Science of Life (Hardcover)

Ayurveda and its principles have been gradually becoming more
accessible to Westerners over the last thirty years. During this time,
a few books have appeared by Westerners on the topic offering an
overview of the field, a few have described materia medica in
Ayurvedic terms, and a few texts from India may be available. To date,
however, there has not been a single comprehensive textbook on the
topic written for the Westerner, by a Western clinical practitioner.
Todd Caldecott's book now fills that gap, and also corrects some
common misconceptions about Ayurveda.
Ayurveda was a dying medical system in India by the turn of the
twentieth century, preserved in a few family lineages in South Asia,
but largely supplanted by British colonial medicine and, in parts of
India, by Unani Tibb.After Indian independence in 1948, there was a
resurgence of interest in this traditional national system. The
resurgence unfortunately was not based on the extant thin lineages of
clinical practice, but on books, and filtered through the lens of a
sometimes-fundamentalist approach of twentieth-century Hinduism. Two
aspects of the resurrected Ayurveda as taught in North America are at
odds with the authentic original tradition. First, original Ayurveda was not a vegetarian system,contrary to common contemporary practice in North America. Second, the pulse diagnosis system in Ayurveda does not
differ essentially from the Chinese system. Caldecott, who was trained in a legitimate lineage in India, practices now in Canada, and supervised a teaching clinic there for some years at the Wild Rose College in Calgary, has corrected these distortions. This is not just a philosophical consideration. Review of Divine Appointment: A Caregiver's Guide (Paperback)

I foundDelores Thornton's book very informative, and on the money, when it comes to what you should do and who to contact if a loved one becomes unable to care for themselves, or dies. It's full of resources for those who don't know where to turn in case sudden tragedy strikes or before it happens!

I look at this book as if it were my Guardian Angel guiding me on what to do next during family crisis, which are inevitable.

Review of The Hospice Choice: In Pursuit of a Peaceful Death (Paperback)

I found this book educational and easy to read. It provides a very clear picture of hospice and palliative care to the layperson. I wish that more physicians and their staff would read books like this so they could better prepare patients and their families for hospice care. I also wish I had read it before my mother died because I would have known better questions to ask our hospice and perhaps would have received better care for mom, myself and the rest of thefamily.
