Review of This Hill, This Valley (American Land Classics) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I found this book to be another of Hal Borland's masterful descriptions of the nature around us. When Hal describes a brook to fish in, or a hill loaded with color in the fall, an animal's tracks in the snow, aweathered fence line falling down, the sound of geese far overhead on a cold clear night.....You can feel, hear, and see in your mind's eye... exactly what he was describing. You might have even experienced these things, yourself, at some point in your busy life, but never thought any more about it until you opened the pages of this and all others by Hal Borland. This book is not only a MUST read....It's a GREAT read. Enjoy

Review of Health Promotion in Communities: Holistic and Wellness Approaches (Hardcover)

This book not only applies a holistic-wellness perspective to community health, but it also focuses on community strengths and resilience. Chapters focus on positive nutrition, healthy environments, fitness and self-care skills, not risks and disease.

Whether you're a practitioner or a student, you'll find a lot of useful information. Some things I really liked are strategies for preventing violence in the schools and larger community, smoking cessation approaches and information on how to sharpen my communication skills with individuals and groups---something I haven't had in depth since I took psych/mh nursing!

Review of Shadow of the Dragon (Paperback)

Shadow of the Dragon

I would give the book a ten out of ten because it really showed a lot of emotion and it was very dramatic. The book is about a young boy named Danny and his cousin Sang Lee. Danny and Sang Lee both watch out for each other and they really care. Sang Lee is trying to learn some English because he had never spoken very much back at home. When Sang Lee starts to become friends with the wrong group of people Danny and the rest of the family become worried. Eventually Sang Lee joins the gang, which his family is offended of. A lot of things happen to Danny when he is trying to stop Sang Lee.

Review of Homeopathic Medicine At Home (Paperback)

I have been studying homeopathy for 30 years & when I do not have time to fully repertorize an illness (which is almost NEVER with anything acute these days!) this book is my first resource. It seems to cover most acute illnesses & is especially good for treating colds, flu, stings, gas, teething problems, sore throats, etc....

I would like to see a better cross-referenced Index, but the numerous charts supplied somewhat make up for this short-coming - making it pretty easy to locate the problem/illness without too much difficulty. It also contains a nice little Materia Medica in the back -- so if you can't decide between several remedies this will help narrow the choice as it gives the specifics for the remedy as opposed to the main part of the book which gives the recommended remedies for the illiness.

I often back it up with "Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines" by Stephen Cummings & Dana Ullman - but if I had to choose only one book to purchase I would go with the book I am reviewing.

Another small short-coming of the book is it doesn't cover CELL SALTS as completely as needed (although, to be fair, no "quick-guide" homeopathic book does - with any depth anyway). which is why I would recommend the companion book: "Natural Healing with Cell Salts" by Dr. Skye Weintraub. Personally, I have found cell salts to work extremely well in conjunction with homeopathic remedies. Even though I practice the principals of classical homeopathy (ONE remedy at a time - changing the remedy until you find the one that works, & change remedies as soon as symptoms change &/or the current remedy no longer works) I still like to combine a homeopathic remedy with a cell salt. (A good example here would be a fever with a flushed face: homeopathic remedy might be Belladonna, and add the cell salt - Ferr Phos.)

Over-all I couldn't give the book 5 stars due to the inadequate Index and less-than-stellar coverage of CELL SALTS, but for my money, this is still a best-bet!

If you are new to homeopathy I can not encourage you enough to pursue this wonderful means of natural healing! And if you are a Christian, I urge you NOT to get hung up on the aspect of energetic healing until you learn more about the principals. I am a Christian who have seen ignorant fellow-Christians shrink at the idea of homeopathics as if they were some kind of voodoo. This is simply a fear-driven response that hopefully will be re-evaluated.

Anyone interested in pursuing the principals of healing through homeopathic medicine, more in-depth, would do well to purchase the book "The Science of Homeopathy" by George Vithoulkas and also get a Materia Medica by Boerricke and a "Repertory" by J. T. Kent. You could also call your local naturopath & ask if they offer classes. Anyone can learn homeopathy. I began when my children were born and they never had to take antibiotics more than once throughout their entire childhoods. They are now all adults who practice homeopathy with their own families, and this is the first homeopathic book I gave them as a gift when they moved into their new homes (along with a basic supply of remedies). Good luck, and God bless.

Product Description
This one-volume compendium of homeopathic information includes the history of homeopathy, an explanation of its principles, and advice on dosage. A full pharmacopoeia of natural remedies for common ailments and injuries, it also contains sections on homeopathy for children and pets.

Review of The Johns Hopkins Complete Home Guide to Symptoms & Remedies (Hardcover)

This book has a rather unique layout that actually makes it easier to use than most similar books. The first part of the book focuses on symptoms. You look up your primary symptom, and then look to see if there are associated symptoms that match yours. If you have a match of symptoms then you read the different possible diagnosis for those symptoms and the distinguishing features of each diagnosis. The best way to illustrate how easy it is to use an example.Suppose you see some blood in your urine. You look up "Blood in the urine" and find that there are two subdivisions - with urinary difficulty or incontinence, without urinary difficulty or incontinence. If there is no urinary difficulty or incontinence then there are five possible diagnoses provided. Each of these five provides distinguishing features so you can easily figure out if you match one of them.

The second part of the book details the disorders provided in the symptom diagnosis portion. So, if you determined that you probably have an esophageal stricture you can look that disorder up and find out what it is, what causes it, prevention strategies, diagnostic techniques, how to treat it, and most importantly, when to call a doctor. With clear writing and lavish illustrations it provides a clear understanding of the problem. The John Hopkins Complete Home Guide to Symptoms & Remedies is a very highly recommended book to have handy in every home.
