Review of Herbs for Natural Beauty (Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Remedies) (Paperback)

First off: I love this author's books-after buying this one, I purchased her herbal book for women. This is an awesome book for those like myself who prefer shopping at natural food stores and if you like the idea of making your own beauty products. Rosemary has a warm and friendly style in this well written, easy to read book. I really like how she has enriched the book with personal beauty stories and tips not just recipes. It is a fun little book making use of herbs quite a bit with a lot of great info and recipes packed inside. Would make a great intro book to making your own products but is also a good resource for those with experience. Oh, and there is a good section defining the needed ingredients like cocoa butter, rosewater etc-she tells you what is is/what it does/and availability of the item-very helpful. Thanks to her I know that Borax makes the skin cleaner & softer-it is a great ingredient mined from the earth-not a scary manufactured chemical like I thought! I am happy to have this book as part of my natural beauty library. (I also enjoy using Janice Cox's natural beauty books.)

Review of Herbs for Reducing Stress & Anxiety (Natural Health Handbooks) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I can't imagine going wrong with any of Rosemary's books. I'm an aromatherapist and herbalist [...] and make all of my own products- and I have hundreds of books on herbs. This little book is a wonderful value for someone who would like to learn more about herbs and make their own herbal remedies. Her tea and tincture recipes are great. I prefer using essential oils to using infusions of herbs in the bath personally, but her formulas are very good- as always. If you want a more general book I would suggest her Family Herbal- which is really a wonderful, simple, treasure of a book for herbalists of all levels!

Review of Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal: A Guide to Living Life with Energy, Health, and Vitality [ILLUSTRATED] (Hardcover)

Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal: A Guide to Living Life with Energy, Health, and Vitality, is basically all her small manuals (Home Medicine Chest, Herbs for Beauty, Herbs for Children.. etc..) condensed into one handy volume with added information she doesn't include in her other books. She has been an herbalist for quite some time, and really knows her stuff. She also presents it in an easy to read and understand format while including some information about scientific properties of certain plants. Of course, you can't only have one book on herbalism, you have to cross reference, but this is a good book to add to your collection. It has a lot of good recipes, too.

Product Description
Considered the mother of modern herbalism in North America, Rosemary Gladstar has inspired an entire generation of herbalists and has been a driving force in herbal education. Now everyone can share in her wisdom and enthusiasm with this practical yet evocative compendium. It offers easy-to-understand information for achieving optimal health, as well as tried-and-true advice for feeling positive and energetic - naturally. Gladstar offers intensely personal and uplifting insights into her own life and the lives of her mentors and friends, giving readers a cross-generational guide to living life with true and boundless enthusiasm. Her herbal recipes address everyday ailments, ease stress and anxiety, and promote radiant beauty within and without while nurturing longevity and well-being throughout the life cycle. An herbal apothecary at the end of the book provides an A-to-Z guide to herbs and their healing uses, along with safety precautions, dosage information, and guidelines for when to seek traditional medical help.

Review of Herbal Healing for Women (Paperback)

Rosemary Gladstar has a winner with HERBAL HEALING FOR WOMEN.She begins with a simple premise--women have needs different from men.Women, cannot escape the calendar, the seasons, and nature in general. Men don't experience menses, bear children, or go through menopause. Herbs that ease the pain women know first hand can only be seen as Goddess-sends if you will.

Because men and women are different, not all the herbs that work for men will work for women--and vice versa.Unfortunately, not too many "herbalists" clearly acknowledge this in their various books. In many herbal books and manuals you have to dig to find the information specific for age and sex, but Gladstar has arranged the female part in logical categories associated with the various phases of a woman's life.

For example, Black Cohash (Cimicifuga Racemosa), Linseed oil, and Isoflavins contain phytoestrogens and are used in Europe to alleviate the symtoms of menopause. Since the side effects of some of the regularly prescribed synthetic estrogens derived from mare's urine are not only acquired in despicable ways (ask PETA) but are dangerous to your health (don't belive me? read the little piece of paper that comes with your prescription) you might consider alternatives. I have and am here to say that some of the unhappy consequences I experienced from the over-the-counter drug are a thing of the past.

As part of my Master's Degree program (I am a sociologist-demographer), I studied mortality, morbidity, and biostatistics at Georgetown University and learned how to read biomedical research. I have maintained a personal interest in, and spent the last 30 years keeping up with, medical studies about women's issues. So, I am not ignorant of the strengths and shortcomings of various drugs used to deal with women's "complaints."The bad news is this--all synthetic drugs have bad side effects.Sometimes they are worse than what ails you. Synthetics simply aren't as good as the original, and as Gladstar points out, you even have to be careful where the original is involved.

For example, the current evidence for HRT with estrogens made from mare's urine is conflicted. Unfortunately, for ages and ages, males were the only medical subjects in scientific studies. So, it will take awhile to find out just how effective and/or damaging therapies like HRT are. In the interim, my daughter's midwife recommended herbs known to women through the ages and I am taking these to deal with the symptoms of menopause.

Ms. Gladstar discusses the clinical reseach associated with each of the herbs listed in her book, including those of interest to me at this phase in my life.Thank goodness, she doesn't limit herself to research conducted in the U.S. And, unlike the European herbalists, she includes herbs known and used by American Indian women.

I have a number of favorites, many I've known about since I was a child. I will never forget discovering the cure for warts from a little classmate in 4th grade.I rushed home to tell my mother because my sister suffered from warts (all over her hands).Mom had tried everything, but this procedure worked.I tried it years later on a horse that broke out with warts all over his body--they are caused by a virus--and he survived the virus and lost all his warts. My little friend was only nine years old, and had an amazing knowledge of home remedies.Of course we know these are just old wives tales.

Review of Herbs for the Home Medicine Chest (Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Remedies) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

This is an excellent resource book. Rosemary gives you natural remedies to common ailments that we all suffer from. Her books are easy to read and comprehend and a valuable addition to any herbal library. I can't say enough good things about her books: she gives you recipies to follow, ways to prepare herbal concoctions in various forms using a variety of bases and her writing is very down to earth.

Here is the however: This book and a few of her others are completely included in her book "Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal". The "Family Herbal" includes: Taming Stress & Anxiety, Home Remedies for Everyday Ailments, Recipes for Radiant Beauty, For Children, For Women, For Men and also For Elders and even more information then that - including information on how to prepare herbs, An A - Z Herbal Apothecary, etc...

The only book, where the topic is also touched on in "The Family Herbal", I would purchase aside from "The Family Herbal" is "Herbal Healing For Women" and any of her other books whose titles aren't included in "The Family Herbal"
