Review of Deliberate Life: The Ultimate Homesteading Guide (Paperback)

I wish I had stumbled on this book prior to ordering several others. It truely is very broad based and covers quite a few of the subjects near and dear to the modern homesteader's life. I figure I could have saved $100.00 at least!Highly recommended.

Product Description
Can you make your own bread? Homeschool your kids? Grow a garden all winter? What can you use instead of toilet paper? What if the power was out for a month? What if the grocery store closed? Can you make a solar oven? A food storage? Raise a water buffalo? Make fine linen from stinging nettle? Is it possible to be totally self-sufficient?This book answers all these questions. All of the information included had to meet this criteria:It is something that ANYONE can do, without special training. It can be done with relatively few supplies, or with stuff you can make yourself. It came from a proven source of information (the military, real homesteaders, 19th c. books, doctors, etc.)This book is not a storybook or a cookbook. It is a practical guide with nitty gritty details on everything a homesteader can do, step-by-step with hundreds of illustrations. And you can do it! This book can help.

Review of How Come? Planet Earth (Paperback)

I LOVED this book. It's not just for kids -- though I'm sure they'll enjoy it, as much as I did.The author's choice of subject matter is excellent, and she explores each subject at just the right depth. Her breezy and humorous writing style is a joy to read.

And it's educational, too! Although I have an advanced science degree, and have been a lifelong reader in various sciences, I found myself learning something new in each essay.

I strongly recommend "How Come? Planet Earth" to curious minds of any age.

Review of Plain Folk's Fight: The Civil War and Reconstruction in Piney Woods Georgia (Civil War America) (Hardcover)

The Civil War's reconstruction process in Piney Woods Georgia is the narrowed focus of Plain Folk's Fight, an in-depth examination of the efforts to the Civil War on the rural South. Race consciousness was at the forefront of a fight by rural whites to defend their way of life in their neighborhood. These rural folk helped tip Georgia toward secession in 1861, supplied troops during the war, and found themselves divided in loyalty to the Confederate nation and their neighbors. Chapters focus on volunteer units, family organization, stories of hardship and independence, and black/white relationships affected by terrorism. Not for the casual Civil War student, but a 'most' for any serious discussion or collection.

Product Description
In an examination of the effects of the Civil War on the rural Southern home front, Mark V. Wetherington looks closely at the experiences of white "plain folk"--mostly yeoman farmers and craftspeople--in the wiregrass region of southern Georgia before, during, and after the war. Although previous scholars have argued that common people in the South fought the battles of the region's elites, Wetherington contends that the plain folk in this Georgia region fought for their own self-interest.

Plain folk, whose communities were outside areas in which slaves were the majority of the population, feared black emancipation would allow former slaves to move from cotton plantations to subsistence areas like their piney woods communities. Thus, they favored secession, defended their way of life by fighting in the Confederate army, and kept the antebellum patriarchy intact in their home communities. Unable by late 1864 to sustain a two-front war in Virginia and at home, surviving veterans took their fight to the local political arena, where they used paramilitary tactics and ritual violence to defeat freedpeople and their white Republican allies, preserving a white patriarchy that relied on ex-Confederate officers for a new generation of leadership.

Review of The "Go Ask Alice" Book of Answers: A Guide to Good Physical, Sexual, and Emotional Health (Paperback)

At www.goaskalice.columbia.edu, there is one of the best sources for advice on sex, relationships, and health for people ages 14 and up. This book is the print version.

It has nothing to do with the adolescent potboiler written by Beatrice Sparks; its information on drugs and sex is technical, explicit, and meant to give answers, not scare people. The gamut of advice given runs from flirting to penis size to the effects of various drugs on the body to urinary tract infections, and it's delivered with humor and understanding, without the judgementalism that seems to be the case in many more traditional books.

While I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who hasn't hit their 13th birthday yet, this book is an antidote for prudishness and the information vacuum far too many young people live in, and in a world where basic information on sex and life can often be hard to find or heavily polluted by unnecessary moralism, this book can help ease fears and educate the uneducated in a way that scare stories and sermons can't.
