Review of Goodbye to Shy: 85 Shybusters That Work! (Paperback)

This Shybusters book is the best I have read. While I am not a blubbering idiot around women, I do tend to get tongue-tied. Well, this book solved that problem. It's about getting more confidence through steps, not instantenously. The author's Sybusters tips throughout the book helped even more, especially the ones aimed at dating. Overall, it's about getting out there and feeling the fear and doing it anyway, as they say. For that, this book can't be beat. Another that helped me as well was How To Be The Man Women Want: The Get More Confidence and Meet Better Women Guide To Dating.

Review of Think and Grow Rich!: The Original Version, Restored and Revised (Paperback)

I was introduced to "Think and Grow Rich!" by an alcoholic member of our cemetery sales team.I had a wife and three children at the time, and we were just barely making it. My only source of income was the commissions I made knocking on doors selling cemetery property, and they were hard to come by, especially since almost nobody was a permanent resident in the Miami area.

Reading "Think and Grow Rich!" gave me a crutch to lean on as I forced myself out to pound those doors where the potential prospects were. If my family was going to eat, I had to convince people to buy cemetery property 30 or 40 or more years before they would need it. The Six-Step Success Formula the book contains helped me to realize that there was a way even for an uneducated lunkhead like me to make it like the big guys. I followed the success formula faithfully, and, lo and behold, my whole life turned around.

Two of my most useful tools in the book are the poem "My Wage" ("I bargained with Life for a penny...") and "If You Think You Are Beaten" ("Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man...").I truly believe that Dr. Hill has the same message the Bible has for us. It was just little easier for me to apply.I went on to build the largest cemetery organization in the country starting out from my basement on Concord Avenue in Anderson, S. C. In 1970, we sold 30 cemeteries to Service Corporation International, making it possible for them to become the largest funeral-cemetery company in the world.I served as President of their Cemetery Division for three years.

I'm now 82 years old, living comfortably on the shores of Lake Hartwell with my wife of 62 years. Almost all my good fortune came about because I had the good fortune to be introduced to "Think and Grow Rich!" in 1953.(This new addition is actually closer to the one I read back then. The versions sold since the 1960s omit a lot of material that Ross Cornwell has put back in.) I have given away many cases of this great book. It was required reading in my company and in my family, and it has made a difference in a lot of the people's lives who were given the opportunity to make it part of their lives.

Thank you, Ross Cornwell, for this wonderful "added value" new edition of the book that has meant everything to me -- and for giving me this opportunity to look back and appreciate how really important all of this is and what a difference it has made in my life and the lives of so many others.

Review of Tales from Rhapsody Home: Or, Reporting Live from Our Last Resort (Paperback)

Anyone nearing retirement should consider this a textbook. It's belly-laughing funny, and the warning is clear.

Product Description
When a feisty ninety-two-year-old Mainer took up residence in an assisted-living facility, he found there were at least four things he could do about it: move, die, get over it, or write this book.

For the past forty-two years, Down East Yankee John Gould has written about and been a staunch observer of the human condition. Here, Gould turns his perceptively critical lens toward lives as they are lived in an assisted-living facility. Five years ago, even though growing old still felt like an afterthought, Gould and his wife needed to move to an assisted-living community, henceforth known as "Rhapsody Home." Captivatingly charming, sarcastic, despairing, flip, taciturn, erudite, and altogether wonderful, Gould-an American original and a perfect narrator-tells the disagreeable truth about the move to Rhapsody Home. From the chef who quit because he couldn't stand the food to the apartment windows that were designed never to open, Gould, with razor sharp wit and a knack for turning a phrase, proves you can write a funny book about this very serious subject.

With a new epilogue, this is a mixture of personal narrative and skillful reportage-a remarkable first-person account of what it's like to live in an assisted-living facility, and a much needed look at the way we provide for our elders.

Review of Born to Organize: Everything You Need to Know About a Career As a Professional Organizer (Paperback)

I have purchased and read 15 "Organizing" books from Amazon.com in the past 3 months. I can tell you for certain there is no book as helpful for starting your Professional Organizing career as this one! I have been organizing for friends and family all my adult life (yes, only for the FUN of it), until 3 months ago when someone suggested I look into doing it as a career. At first I laughed since I had never heard of that job title before. I did some quick research one night-- and boy was I way off. Not only has the industry doubled in popularity in recent years, but the profession is very well paying, very diverse in specialities, and allows many opportunities for growth and education (especially when paired with the association NAPO).
One of the first book titles that fell into my hands was Sara's. This is now almost my daily reference guide! With her helpful pro-con advice I was able to make an educated decison about launching my career in this field. I have taken all of her advice, especially about not underpricing myself, and only 2 months into taking paying clients I have had 9 clients, 3 of which have and/or are currently doing thier WHOLE house AND storage units with me! I average about $1000-1500 per individual contract now. Did I mention I have hardly had to advertise yet? Sara's referral system is incredibly lucrative, and I am highly confident when things slow down her solid marketing techniques will keep me afloat. She is so creative, clear, and organized in her text that it gets me pumped up everytime I crack the pages. I learned something new and profound for my business on every page. NO LIE! I especially appreciated her 8 week start up plan, and her many resource lists (I think I've used them all by now). What more do I need to say? If you are new in this business and aren't going to buy this book-- well then you will simply be missing out on TONS of education, TONS of clients (and tons of money), and I will be perfectly happy to have your business!:) Thank you Sara for writing such a fantastic HOW TO manual for this bizz with terrific insight for the new PO's!
Great Thanks from "Clutter Free Kimberly" in Fairfax, VA

Review of Armed Response: A Comprehensive Guide to Using Firearms for Self-Defense (Paperback)

David Kenick does a great job of covering most of the major issues you must consider if you are going to carry a firearm for self defense.

He starts off by discussing the misconceptions people have regarding police protection, the Body Alarm Reaction, the fact that action always beats reaction and empty hands defensive skills. He then covers the basics of gun handling - safety, trigger systems, jams and malfunctions, concealed carry, drawing from a holster, etc...The final parts of the book cover competitions, consequences of a shooting, other safety tools and gun control.

Some unique items in this book you will not find in others...what to do after the bad guy drops his weapon and surrenders? The reality that empty hands skills are necessary regardless of what you carry and a realistic discussion on stopping power and ammunition selection.

Overall, this is a very good book written by a responsible citizen. His lack of affiliation with law enforcement and the military, unlike many self defense authors, makes the book easier to read and understand.
